NEW YORK, Februar: E couraged by the impressive showing made by such industrial reports came out over the week end and by the manifest favor shown toward high-grade dividend-paying rails in the last business session on Friday, the upward movement was resum>d on the Stock Exchange today, with practically all groups participating. ‘While the market for Baldwin Loco- motive evidently had discounted the favorable showing in the 1926 report, it was a matter of satisfaction to Wall Street and was having its effect upon sentiment. e action of du Pont directors in placing the stock o an annual $8 basis, compared with Ahe previous $7 rate, was a natural sequel to the General Motors section, but it was another piece of good news to work upon, Baldwin Locomotive, more than a point lower, rallled well above the Friday final, while other equipments stood out strongly from the outset. This was true of West- inghouse Electric, which was evi- dently bought for sp 1 reasons, and of New York Alrbrake, Pullman Company and several lower-priced members of the group. Speculation went more and more out of the so-called merger rails into the high-grade seasoned dividend payers. Atlantic Coast Line rise extended to more than 3 points before profit taking was encountered. New York Central was carried forward under the same sort of demand which came into the market last week. Gains of a point and more were common in such favor- jtes as Rock Island, New Haven and Gulf, Mobile and Northern, although there were no new developments to account for the persistent demand. Peoria and Eastern was a feature among junior issues, whi e Pere Mar- quette was responding to rumors not directly concerned with the Nickel Fiate merger plans. Nothing new developed to account for the favor in which steel shares were held. Their strength was sim- ply a reflection of confidence in the future business outlook, which nat- urally was to be reflected in a basic industry such as the stocks of these companies represent. United States Steel common above 159 compared with the previous clos- ing quotation of 15 5 Gulf States Stee] gained more than 2 points when it crossed 60, while Bethlehem, Repub- lic and Crucible were a point or more higher. Youngstown's streéngth ac- companied the announcement that the stock had been placed on a $5 divi- dend basis. Among industrial special- ties Woolworth went into new high ground under the present form -of capitalization, responding to the fa- vorable sales figures reported for the first week in February. Reserve Board Reviews Progress. The Federal Reserve Board has just fssued a review of 1926 which shows that industrial production eclipsed all previous records in spite of a lull in the last quarter. In connection with his claim that only 3,000,000 individuals in the United States own stocks or bonds, Joseph S. McCoy, Treasury actuary, concludes: “This means that an average of one family out of every ten owns stock in one or more corporations, that some 2,358,000 stockholders, most of whom hold ‘stock in many concerns, prac- tically own the 410,000 corporations in the United States. In addition to these individuals, religious organi tions, foundations and charitable ir stitutions own about one-third of 1 per cent of the total corporate stock. “The 11,000 millionaires of the country received about $300,000,000 i dividends, or less than 7 per cent of the total declared. From this it is evident that no longer are the corpora- tions closely owned.
