- 14 EXCITED SESSION INSTOCK MARKET Wheeling Is Feature, With 35-Point Rise—Some Shorts Still Fight. 23 BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February $.—It was another day of excited speculation on the Stock Exchange and sensational developments in the market for rail- road stocks. Following the statements after the close of business yesterday concerning acquisition of the Rocke- feller holdings of Wheeling and Lake Erie by the Nickel Plate, New York Central and Baltimore and Ohio in- terests, Wall Street came down to business enlightened as to where vir- trol of the road is held. The t a triangled corner existed was made plain by the amount of stock said to have been acquired by these prominent interests. The professional element, which found that it had made the serious mistake of fighting such a powerful roup, came to the realization that it almost impossible to get in their contracts in Wheeling common. Jumping 10 points over night to 105, the stock subsequently changed hands n\d after ~(llm|.. at this figure od bid. with none of- 11\fl preferred after opening at fered. 831 for an overnight gain of 4 points was carried up sharply to much the highest since the jresent speculation started. Premium Still $7 a Share Today. The premium remained at the top of 7 per cent, and there was still some who were willing to pay the exorbi- tant rate rather than admit defeat. ‘What Wall Street appeared to be chiefly concerned about was the future trunk line plans of the big system. Traders continued to seek out lo priced issues which were likely to fig- ure in these calculations. Such stocks as Chicago and Alton, Chicago Great Western, Peoria and Eastern and others were turned over in enormous ‘volume at rising prices. Wabash com- mon, long known to be a Loree enter- prise, was carried along in the wake. Banger and Aroostook, of which the floating supply is known to be unusual- 1y small, continued in spectacular ad- vance. But while all this was in progress, considerable uneasiness was being felt over the effect this was to have upon the market in general. Many quarters expressed the belief that the turbu- lent market for railway stocks was a decidedly unhealthy development, and this view was reflected in an uncertain movement in other quarters. Hudson Drops Back. The demand which set in yesterday for Hudson Motors continued for a time, but after having extended its gain another two points the price dropped back to yesterday's final. General Motors was rather freely offered, changing hands most of the time at a decline of a point or more. United States Steel common was practically neglected around 157, while the effect of the highly favorable Republic Iron and Steel report which was pro nounced in the market for independ- ent steel shares yesterday appeared to have spent itself. Crucible, Colorado Fuel and Iron and Bethlehem worked higher at intervals, but the bulk of the demand evidently had been sup- lied. g Remington Typewriter stood out strongly for a time following the dec- laration of a dividend establishing the stock on a regular annual $5 basis, but lost most of the five-point gain in the later trading. Realizing sales which were pronounced in Houston 0il yesterday following the last week’s rise of more than 20 points started forward again, but other oils were little changed. The selling which has been so persistent in General Electric again asserted itsélf, carrying the prices down substantially. 45 MARYLANDERS SUED IN OIL FIRM ACTIONS Special Dispatch to The Stas. BALTIMORE, February 8.—Thirty Baltimoreans and 15 other Maryland- ers are named as defendants in two equity suits filed in the United States District Court here to recover the pur- chase price of sock sold and divi- dends paid them by ‘two oil com- panies, The bills were filed by Clifford C. Bosworth, receiver for the High Grav- ity Oil Co., and Fred C. Stilz, repre- senting as receiver the Stanton Oil Co. Both corporations were organized in_Dejaware in 1917. Mr. Bosworth asks that dividends amounting to $103,000, paid to the Maryland stockholders in 1919, be re- turned. He stated that the amount ‘was voted by the board of direcors of the High Gravity Co. and was paid out of the capital stock: because of the lack of surplus to pay the amount. The Stanton Oil Co. paid dividends amounting to $435,000, the complaint shows, although, it further states, a large part of this amount was paid to holders of stock which had never been paid for. MEDIUM WOOLS ACTIVE. BOSTON, February 8 (Special).—Me- dium grade territory and fleece wools are in better inquiry in the Boston wool market and transactions today were more generally on the high side of the current price range. Demand for finer sorts continues to be fea tured by purchases by top makers. Fine territory is quoted at 1.10a1.12, with exceptional quality at 1.14, fine ¥rench (t)lnmn" .0521.08, half- blood shths blood at 90a9 and quarter-blood at 80; In fleece wools de- laine is quoted at 45246 grease basis, | half-blood at , three-eighths: blood at 45a46 and qu.mer blood at 45. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Capital Traction stock closed on the Washington Stock Exchange today at 105%, three-fourths of a point above the final sale last Saturday, thereby displaying unusual strength in the face of the District Court of Appeals’ decision handed down yesterday lopping $5,150,000 off’ the company’s valuation figures. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispaten to ‘Lhe Star, NEW YORK, February 8.—Thres reatures stood out in today's bond trading. One was the first appearance of support in foreign groups, whero realizing sales have been going or for almost a week. Another was the activity in the bonds of those rail the stocks of which were the objects of such excited speculation on the ex- change. Finally, there was a harden ing of the market for the strictly high grade investment issues. The recovery in the foreign list w: most prunmm.m in French oblig tions. Gains in all the principal is sues in this part of the list were re corded early in the day. French s crossed 102, for.a gain of more than a half point; French 7Ti:s sold abov 110, which was an adv of over a point, and French 8s gained as much when they crossed 109. Interest in the railway class cer tered about such bonds as Chicago Great Western 4s, which sold in vol issues ume above 72 at approximately the high of year, and in Erie con- vertible “D" "4s, although here the price movement was more irregular. Opportunities for specula- e profit in this grade of bond are limited by the large advance all of them have enjoyed since the first of the year. Union Pacific first 4s was the leader in the high-grade group. Selling® av 96, they duplicated the 1927 recor All the Liberties were firm and mo of them slightly higher. Domestic industrials were irregular. Third Avenue adjustments broke nearly point on small offerings. Barnsdali 6s with warrants gave w. “»”‘h the stock. Brooklyn Manhattan 6s were down nearly half a point. On the other hand, International Mercantile Marine 6s held well around 99 in the face of the unofficial estimate that. operating income in 1926 would be a million (lc-ll.u‘s less lhfln in 1925, WHEAT PRICE HIGHER IN TODAY’S DEALINGS Firmness at Liverpool Tends to Hold Values Up at Chicago. Corn Is Easier. By the Associated Pre: CHICAGO, February 8.—Indications of a cold wave had a strengthening influence on wheat today toward the last. Practically all territory is with- out snow protection. On_ the other hand, export demand for North American wheat was slow and the world’s available supply increased 2,304,000 bushels for the week. Wheat closed firm, 3 to 1 cent higher, corn % to 3 up, cats un- and 3 advance and provisions from 5 cents de- cline to a cents. Mild weather in European wheat re- gions was reported today as causing crop damage. Besides, anxiety as to possible further injury by a freeze in the absence of snow covering also was noted, especially among growers in Sdandinavia. Meanwhile, notwith- standing predictions of heavily increas- ing supplies on ocean passage, evi- dence continued of ready absorption of wheat available at Liverpool for im- mediate use. Uncertainty over the MeNary-Hau- gen agricultural Dill at Washington was chiefly effective here today as a deterrent to trading on either side of the \\h&ull market..
