28 B NAI BRITH PLANS, GULTURALPROGRAM Jewish Organization to Raise $2,000,000 to Aid Teaching Centers. By the Associated Press PHILADELPHIA, January 31.—En- Iargement of the cultural program of the Independent Order of B'nai B'rith, one of the largest Jewish fraternal or ganizations of the countr as an- | nounced last night by Alfred M. Cohen, international president of the order, at | the biennial convention of district No. 3. The aistrict includes the States of | Pennsylvania, New Jersey, sDelaware | end West Virginia. The plans of the national organtza- | tion, Mr. Cohen said, call for tne rais ing of $2,000,000 for the establishment ot Jewish teaching centers and the} “protection of Jews from slander, defa mation and discrimination.” One-half of the fund will be devoted to the cul tural program at the large universi ties—centers known as Hillel founda tions—and the other half will be used to enlarge the scope (v( the Anti-Defa- { mation League. Hillel foundations, intended to keep alive the traditions and principles of Judaism among Jewish students, Mr. | Cohen said, already had been estab Hished at the Universities of Michigan, Il’llnola. Wisconsin, Ohio and Califor- nia. Mr. Cohen is president of the He- brew Union College at Cincinnati and & member of the Ohio Legislature. CAPT. UNMACHT HONORED. Washington Camp, Heroes of '76, Elect Him Commander. Capt. George F. Unmacht, C. W. S, was elected unanimously to be com. mender of the Washington Camp, Heroes of 76, at a banquet at the Con- gressional Country Club Saturday night. Capt. C. L. Middleton was made adjutant and 18 recruits were initiated into the society. Capt. Unmacht was chief of staff during 1926. He is also the depart- ment adjutant of the American Legion for the District of Columbia and na- tlonal secretary of the National So- Journers' Club. ¢ Heroes of '76 is an organization formed 60 vears ago for the purpose of perpetuating the memory of the patriots who figured conspicuously during the revolutionary struggle. It now comprises 20 camps of Heroes throughout th ecountry. Col. C. Van Deventer of Chicago is the national commander and Capt. Unmacht is the national adjutant. SR L U. S. TRADE FLEET GROWS. Total of 2,072 Vessels “Available, Board's Survey Shows. More’ merchant - ships flying the American flag were employed in for- elgn trade on January 1 than at any time - during 'the last four years, a Shipping Board survey made public yesterday revealed. Government. and privately owned vessels ' available for, foreign, Inter- ocoastal and coastwise - trade totaled 3,072, In the foreign trade were 727 ships with af ‘aggregate tonnage of more than 4,000,000, an ircrease of 163 vessels over the figure for the cor- responding date of 1926, The ‘Government-owned merchant . fleet consisted of 847 vessels, of 4,587, 000 gross tons. Forty-two per cent of this fleet was in active service, an increase of 11 per cent over the three months just previous, occasioned by Shipping Board vessels being thrown into service to relieve congestion in the export trade caused by the British coal strike and the consequent diver- sion of many vessels, normally avail- able for transportation of other prod- ucts, to use as colliers. PRESIDENT WAVES RULE. Three Women Are Given Civil Serv- ice Positions. Civil gervice rules have been waived by order of the President in the case of three women seeking employment in the Government service. Employment at Marine Corps head quarters was authorized in the case of Mrs. Arlene K. Mix, widow of a Ma- rine Corps enlisted man. Mrs. Cath- erine E. Greenwald, widow of a for- mer employe of the Interstate Com- merce Commission, was given a cler- foal post in the classified service and Mrs. Bessie' G. Thatcher was reinstat- ed in a clerical position in the postal service. Now they can fight sore fl;ru( all day!
