But the market was a different mar- ket from what it was two weeks ago. Then hopes were running high in brokerage circles that Wall Street was on the verge of another big speculation for the rise. Day by day sinte then these hopes have become dimmer. Only one set of stocks has been going up consistently and that wag some of the merger rafls. They have been going up, of course, not for general reasons, but for reasons peculiar to themselves. The market refused to accept their movement as at all significant of «~eneral conditions and has refused to accept their leadership. Wheeling and Lake Erie doubled its market price in the last fortnight without other non-dividend-paying rails moving more’ than a point and a half. The merger argument failed 10 take hold of the public imagina- tion the way it did in the Autumn of 1925. Gradually this constant fallure of the rushing up of individual stocks to exert any influence upon the general body of the list began to make, senti- ment uneasy. This uneasiness showed in_the market yesterday and again today. ing the first hour, with the erratic Wheeling and Lake Erie moving over a range of five point The market was becoming a poor one for recent specialty favorites. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, January 26.—Foreign bonds again provided the featurs of today's trading but instead of the French it was the German and Brazil- ian obligations that assumed the lead- ership. ~ French bonds were still strong and new high records for ail time were set up by department of the Seine 7s, above 101, with the other French' issues selling around their previous highs, but trading was not so active as on Monday, when the market had the stimulus of the * reported gold shipment from France to this side, a report which later was modified, but which did not check upward movement, German 7s, the international loan crossed 108 foday for the first time selling more than three points above the callable price. There were heavy dealings in Berlin 614, Cologne 63s and Bavaria 6%s all at % Al three Brazilian obligations, the §%s, { the 7s and the 8s went to new highs on the movement. Japanese 6l4s at 102 were at a new 1927 top. 1In general the forelgn section of the mar- ket showed ability to absorb the realiz- ing sales brought about by the exten: of the recent advance. Erle Bonds in Demand. 98% | Erie bonds were in the greates relative demand among the junior rails. Erie convertible D 4s opened at 89, up % point at the highest they have ever sold. The bonds are mow selling _entirely on .the conversiorn privilege which has a prospect value in that they are convertible into com mon stock at 50, up to October 1 next. Other strong issues included New Haven 4s of 1957, which added iractionally to the gain of a point o the day before, both New York, On tario and Western 4 per cent bonds and International Great Northern adjustments. Among the tractions, New York State Rallway 4%s and 6%s stood out. The movement in these had be- guu late yesterday afternoon and was carried on vigorously today. At the high this afternoon the 414s were up some 3 points from the low of the day before and the 6%s showed a gain of almost § points on the same basis. Sugar bonds were well supported and attracted the most attention | among the active industrials. Warner Sugar 7s of 1941 touched 105, up over a point and at a new high since the ! sale of the property was announced, Obligations of the Cuban Producing companies were firm, unaffected by the recent weakness in sugar futures. High-Grade Issues Steady. There was not much change in the strictly high-grade investment bonds, sither the United States Governments or the savings bank rails. The week- ty statement of the member banks of the Federal Reserve system show a reversal of the trend of the week be- fore in that there was a sharp falling off in investment holding other than of United States securities. This appar- ent drop in buying of bonds by the banks coincided with a falling off in commercial loans, an unusual show- nf’rospectlve new financing is heavy. One large new issue will be $25,000,000 North American Edison 5s to be offer- ed at about 98 with a privilege of con- version after one year into preferred stock at par. It is expected that the same company’s secured 6s and 6%s will be called for retirement. Both these issues sold today around their respective prices. WHEAT GOES HIGHER ON EUROPEAN NEWS Larger Estimated Import Require- ments Lead to Advanced Prices Today. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, January 25.—Enlarged estimates of European imports re- quirements led to higher prices early today for wheat. Argentina shippers again raised their asking quotations. Starting at % cent to % upturn, Chi- cago wheat held near to the initial range. Corn, oats and provisions were steady, corn opening at % off to % gain, and later showing little varia- tion. According to a leading authority, European need of wheat is greater by 24,000,000 bushels than has heretofore been figured. World requirements have also been revised upward, al- though to a less extent. The total amount which Europe must obtain from sources outside is now placed at 600,000,000 bushels. Good export business today In wheat from North America is in- dicated. One interest admitted sales of 120,000 bushels of United States wheat to Europe overnight, and there were Liverpool advices of active de- mand for all nearby offerings. WHEAT— Low.
