Few Will Wear Suits in Swim MAJORITY OF TO BEPEND UPON GREASE tance Race Will Be Anointed With Contestants in D) ippery Compound——No and Sexes to BY JOHN K. EMGE AVALON, Catalina Island, January | 10.—Two hundred pounds of axle grease and a hundred pounds of prime lard have been delivered here to anoint the bodies of the mermaids and mer- men who will compete in the cross channel swim from this island to the southern California mainland next Saturday for the $40.000 offered by William Wrigley. Ignoring protests by the W. €. T. U,, the Ministerial Association and other organizations, which fear the swim is to be an immodest spectacle. most of the 150 contestants will enter the water nude, their bodies protected and hid den, they insist, by copious plaster ings of crease and lard compond Fifteen pounds of this slippery and disfiguring concoction will be spread from neck to heels of each persen. Grease More Modest. Mrs, Lottie Schoemmell of New York, who was the first to declare | she would not swim if obliged to weur clothing of any kind, declares that casing of grease several inches thick is positively more medest than a one- piece bathing suit. and after she had demonstrated how the grease con- cealed what the average bathing suit reveals, Wrigley declared himself neutral and agreed the contestants could dress as they pleased. As a concession to Mrs. Grund: Wrigley will not permit spectators in thei inclosurew here the swimmers start @nd has also ordered a sep- aration of male aiffd female contest- ants at the time of entering the water. Long Beach authorities have an- nounted that any unclethed swimmer landing on that part of the coast will he arrested. The city counecil of Los Angeles, however, has ignored petitions to order arrests. Observers in the boats will carry cloaks in which to wrap nude swimmers as they land, or if exhaustion forces them to leave the water before the finish, Sixty Women on List. Of the 150 entrants about 60 are women, but probably not mere than 100 will start, with about 30 women. All parts of the count are repre- sented in the entry list, the most notable including J. Sullivan and Mrs. Mille Gade Corson, English Channel veterans. “Trudy” Ederle, who is in Les Angeles will net compete. Hav ing hit the bull's eye once, she won't risk a second shot. Clara Belle Barrett of New Rochelle, who got cold feet after dabbling her toes in the water, and declared she would withdraw rather than freeze, ié recomsidering and is likely to be among the starters. Miss Barrett, who remained many hours in the 64-degree English Channel, is regarded by most woman contest- ants as their most dangerots rival. 8ix Eastern natators, al y on hand for tke event, include Louls | Pete N ENTRANTS peciators at Start, Be Separated. Wrigley has offered $25.000 to the man coming in first and $15,000 to the first among the women. If a woman should bo first to land she will get $25,000 and the men nothing. The distance from Avalon to the breakwater at Los Angeles Harbor is 23 miles, but deviations from the ourse could add many miles and awk- ward currents make a straight course ahead almost impossible. Three big steamers of the Catalina fleet, led byethe flagship Avalon, will escort the swimmers and will be pre pared for any rescue work that may be required sincerely hope some one will let me give him or hor a new year pres- ent of $25,000." ROD AND STREAM BY PERRY MILLER Representative Zihlman of Mary- land, chairman of the District com- mittee, introduced in the House last week a bill to provide a longer closed season for bass in the District of Co- lumbia. As previously stated, this bill was sponsored by the lzaak Walton Chapter of the Potomac Anglers’ As. sociation. It was sent to Commis- sioner O'Malley, who in_turn for- warded it to the District Commission- ers for their approval. Following Representative Zihlman's action in the House Senator Hawes, fathes of the bill passed at the last session of Congress to prohibit the interstate shipment. of “black bass, asked Commissioner O'Malley of the Bureau of Fisheries to draft for him & bill prohibiting the sale of bai large and small mouth, in the District for 10 years. Senator Hawes' proposed hill met with the hearty approval of Commis- sioner O'Malley, who said he would draw up the bill at the earliest pos- sible moment. The past week has been an un- usually busy one for the Commis. sioner, as he has been in conference every day with scientists from all sec- tions of the country. As soon as Sen. ator Hawes gets Mr. O'Malley’s draft he will submit it to the District Com- missioners for their approval. In view of the fact that Potomac Collins Asserts Rube Waddell Was One of Oddest Characters He Ever Has Met in Base Ball TY-ONE YEARS OF BASE BALL. BY EDDIE VII—George Edwnrd Waddell O narrative of my experience: particularly those of my early years in base ball, would he complete without mengion of one of the oddest characters T ever met—George Edward Waddell. Though Rube was nearing the end of his major league career when I came in, I saw enough during 1907 and 1908 to realize what opposing bat- ters had to face when they opposed him on, one of his good days. I think it was Bender who once told me about Rube’s introduction to the A's. He pitched against New York, and just 27 men faced him in the nine innings through the High- landers (as they were then called) got a run, due to a base on balls and an error. The A’S won. On another occasion he made a curi- ous record against the same team. He ‘retired the same three players—Gil bert, Howell and Cronin—on strikes in the third, sixth and ninth_rounds, in one of the innings pitching but nine balls. ‘Whiffled 16 for a Record. In 1908 Connie released him to the Browns, and the first time we met him in & St. Louls uniform he whiffled 16 of us to show Mack that he was not all through. This still is the Ameri- can League strike-out record. T have told how I joined the A's in September, 1906, and that I practiced mornings at the field a week or so he- fore making a trip as one of the team, and that about half the team on that journey were recruits like myself. Nothing pleased Waddell more than to rhower attention on a young player, and at the time I came in he had plenty to do, for the park was full of them. Immediately following cur introduc- tion he had a particularly happy thought. He would exemplify for my benefit standard, regular. every-day. southpaw pitching as it was practiced in the American League. Unnoticed by me, he tipped a wink to Ossie Schreck, his catcher, who also liked his little joke, and then said ple antly that if 1 would grab a bat he would throw me a few. All Stop to See Show. That morning the field was crowded, ‘most of the regulars being out, as well as a flock of rookies. I never learned how many of the others knew what was coming off, but when Rube stalked COLLINS. RUBE WADDEL the trip, and if he did 1 would disgrace the team, if not myself, and so on. Connie’ had watched ‘the exhibition with the rest, and, observing my dis- tress, came over to me when we had finished and said Well, boy, he is pretty good this morning. Harry Davis couldn't have made a hit off that pitching.” (Davis was a right-hand hitter and the best on the club) “There's no ono like Rube, 50 don't he discourage Twh or three of the reguiar also consoled me, and gradually I re covered my nerve. But, believe me, 1 was scared for a few minutes. oting the interest Mr. Mack dis- played and the remarks of the others, Rube concluded he had gone too far. So as soon as he conveniently could he came around and made a few sug- gestions concerning my position at the plate, how I should hold my bat, ete. Rube was the only one of the regu- lar_pitchers who went West with us, and he was very attentive. So I con cluded our account Was square, 1 shall have something to say in one of these articles about g pitchers 1 have faced, but nond ever made the impression on me that Waddell did that morning in practice. players Many Yarns of Prowess. Of the many stories told of the prowess of the Rube some probably are fictitious, but none, however fan- tastiq, beyond the range of possibility. There is a tale that once while with the Chicago Cubs he took French leave and went up to Wisconsin on a fishing bass were being offered for sale in this city last Saturday weighing less than five ounces, a violation of the District fish laws, it is expected that the bill prohibiting the sale of these game fish in the District will meet with the hearty approval of the Commissioners. The Tidal Basin project of planting bass in those waters had another good week, more than 1,000 of adult large mouth bass having been liberated in thein new home. Some of the nicest looking bass it ever has been the privi- lege of the writer to see were planted, several hundred of them weighing over three pounds. Last Friday the writer took Glen C. Leach of the Bureau of Fisheries down the river to ses just how the fish were caught and handled, A mov- ing-picture machine was carried along and movies of the operation were taken under the personal supervision of Maj. Harry S. Kimberly of the Smithsonian Institution, Despite the cold weather, which seemed to get coldes as the party reached the river bank, Mr. Leach donned a pair of hip boots, and the most casual observer could tell that he knew just what he wanted to do and how to do it. Owing to the strong northwest winds of the last couple of days, and also the tide, the water was very low and necessitated a walk of some 75 yards from the shore through goft “'mud and ice. Leach waded right thrbugh it and into water as deep as his boots would allow. His friends were much per- turbed when they saw him apparently sinking deeper in the mud. He, how- ever, apparently knew his business well, because before attemptting to take a step toward shore when his work of supervising the transferring of bass into the containers was fin- ished, he slowly raised first one foot and then the other out of the mud. Upon reaching the shore he was asked if he had not been afraid of sinking in the mud and getting wet, but he replied that he had been in much more precarious positions many times, although admitting that a man unfamiliar with such conditions would surely have fallen into the icy ('old water. Project Assured of Success. It now can be said that the Tidal Basin project is an assured success. Every objective has been attajned, and by the middle of next week all the fish will have been planted, the number being close to 5,000. \When the season starts up next Spring, anglers will have some merry battles with these game fish, especially with the larger ones, a great many weighing close to 4 pounds being among those planted this Winter. There is only one thing more to be done, and that is to have Col. Grant see that a small fee is charged for the privilege of fishing in the basin. Com- missioner O’Malley and Mr. Leach both are of the opinion that that is the only way in which the project can be made a_ continued success. This revenue will he set aside to buy bass to take the place of those caught by the angler If rishing is permitted next season from rowboats, naturally more bass will be caught and more will have to be planted. It is no easy matter to obtain these bass, and they cost a lot of money when purchased by the thousands. The fee method seengs to be the one and only way to keep the project moving in the right way.
