THE EVEN The Little Path. Sylvia Decker with her snow shovel met Zelie Brockett with her snow shovel midway between the Decker and Brockett houses. They paused to rest and talk. “Hope this is the last time we have to shovel out this path this Winter,” Sylvia said. “I'll be glad to sce green grass growing on it.” “Lewls was laughing about us this morning at breakfast,” Zelie replied. “He said our path was like the liga- ment that connected the Siamese twing, He said that when they cut that ligament the twins died “I never heard of the twine,” returned Sylvia. band has funny ideas. Now (eorge says that our little path wears out the grass and spoils the looks of his :a\\'n. He is always grumbling about s “Men can’t understand such things,” Zelie said earnestly. “Lewls declarcs that this little path is bound to lead to trouble. Ife says we're getting too thick. That's the way he speaks of our friendship—I guess you did a lit- tle bit more of this path than I did, Sylvia.” “Not more Sylvia laughed, The little white path with the gleaming snow heaped up on either side led from Sylvia's back door to Zelie's, and 10 times a day one or the other of the women pursued it. If Zelie heard a bit of news over the telephone, if Sylvia made a cake by a new recipe, they must get together forthwith. Little by little this pro- cession between steps had shus them away from the other neighbors. They found sufficlent diversion in each other. Tolerantly the other women looked on and let the two friends alone. Then came a new element into the midst of peaceful Caper street. The Davis house was rented to out-of- town people, the Cards. Mrs. Card was small, dark, vivacious, with her slanting eyes a trifle too close to- gether. She espled the little path be- tween the two opposite houses and laughed about it to her next-door nelghbor, Mrs. Chester. “What does it mean?” she asked. “My son calls it a main artery of travel,” answered Mrs. Chester smil- ingly. “To the rest of us it is just the evidence of a powerful friendship.” “Powerful idiocy!” sneered Mrs. Card. NG STORY back from the complexities of the nar row eyed woman's nature. don’t see how you she told Zelie hy, Sylvia! I find her very terestin She knows so many things. And Lewis is quite with Mr. Card. She has ver to play mah-jong tonigh! via_sniffed Next day she had to hear all about mah-jong party he carried out the Japanese idea right straight through, related enthusiastically. “She served a_mah jong salad, made with sprouted beans and bamboo shoots! 1t was the best stuff. Lewis was crazy over it. She told me how she made it, and I'm goIng to try some. You may have the recipe if you want it, Sylvia.” “I don't want it,” replied Sylvia sharply Spring came on aps melted from the path and the green grass sprang up. It grew rapidly, for there was a diminution of the travel that had once annoyed George Decker. More and more the Cards and Brock etts were together, for the Cards owned a good car and were always ready to take their friends about with them. Sylvia Decker found herself bereft as a bivalye stranded at low tide. She had so long depended upon Zelie for companionship that her other nelghbors had got into the habit of doing without her company. She was lonely and very sad, for she had rely loved Zelie, and it hurt her cruelly to see Zelie wooed from her by a woman she did not like Many an evening that early Sum mer she sat alone on her porch and vatched Zelie go forth gayly in the Card's sedan. Mrs. Card never asked her to ride, never asked her to din ner or to play bridge in the evening Indeed, Mrs. Card scarcely knew that she existed. George Decker's business called him away a great deal, and Sylvia either had to go with him or remain lonesomely at home. She chose to accompany her husband every time she could for the sight of the lawn unmarred now by the little path, sent arrows in her heart. George, of course, was well pleased with the result of that severed ligament. One night Sylvia returned alone to her home after a_ week's outing with George. She had come because some inner sense, or it might have been some other voice, urged her to do k0. As soon as she snapped on her lights, Mrs. Chester came over. “Zelle is sick,” Mrs. Chester said “She is very sick. She ate something that didn’t agree with her when she was picknicking with the ¢ terday. I'm glad you've come, Sylv! I've a houseful of company and I can't take the time to look afte Zelle. And somebody ought to.” Sylvia sald without hesitation “I'll go ri d had any doubts about how Zelie would receive her the: | were dispelled when she saw the way Zelie's eyes filled with tears at sight of her. “Oh, Sylvia!" she said. Sylvia stayed with her that nigh and by morning Zelle was so mucl better that Dr. Potter himself was surprised. Mrs. Card never came to see Zelie at all. “She never goes where there is sickness,” Zelie confessed. ‘“She— she is a fair-weather friend, I guess. But you—oh, Sylvia! What a fool T've been to be led away! And our dear little path has grown over— She cried out of sheer gladness to have Sylvia there, strong and re liable, unchanging. and holding her hand. “It {s my fault that our path has grown over,” Zelie added. Sylvia gave Zelie's hand a squeeze. Never mind,” she said practically. The path itself doesn't matter. It~ —it’s the spirit of friendship that is back of it. And because of it. And because of that spirit, Zelle, the lit tle path ought to be carpeted with everlasting flower: . (The end.) (Copsright. 1926.) e e el ISSUES CREDIT WARNING.
