He had been associated with that theater in varying capacities for more than a quarter of a century. He started in the theater business at the age of 15, when he quit school to ac: cept a_position_as usher in the old Rijou Theater, Louisiana avenue and C street. From the Bijou he went to the ! Academy of Music in Baltimore, re- jturning to this city a year later to |enter the employment of the old Co- lumbia Theater. He moved from the Columbia t8 the National more than 25 vears ago, &nd remained with the latter house until his death. 1t is said that during his long serv- ice with the National Mr. Fowler never had missed an opening night performance. i Mr. Fowler served as business man- ager of the Washington Base Ball Club about the time a youth named Walter Johnson was given a_try-out as pitcher. That was during Joe Cantillon’s reign as head of the club. He traveled with the team during his vacation from the theater. RICHMOND, -Va., October 5.— Peachy Gessner Harrison, 87-year-old son of the late Dr. Gessner Harrison, for many years professor of Latin in the University of Virginia, died sud- denly Sunday. Mr. Harrison served in the 2d_Vir- ginia Cavalry during the Civil War, and for the last 50 years he had made his home in this city. He mar- ried Miss Julla Wood Riddick of Nansemond County in 1872, she dying 12 years ago. He is survived by one brolher, R. L. Harrison of New York, and'three sons, Gessner Harrison of Baltimore and Edward T. Harrison and Rev. Lewis C. Har- rison of this city, and one daughter, Dr. Julia Peachy Harrison, professor of chemistry in Vilson College, Cham- bersburg, Pa. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock. SMITH DIES AT HER HOME HERE Mrs. Marle Van Hook Smith, widow of Middleton Smith, polar explorer, died last night at her home, 1724 Eu- clid street, after an fliness of 10 months. Mrs. Smith was a nattive of Phila- delphia and a descendant of two of the earliest families in Pennsylvania. She was educated in the Pennsylvania city and attained distinction for her work in music and art. As & member of the Daughters of the American Revolution she was quite active, hav- ing been registrar of the Continental Chapter for threp years and a mem- ber of the advisory board for two vears. She was a member also of the National Auxiliary of the Spanish ‘War Veterans, the National Indian Assoclation and the Ramabai Circle of Providence, R. I. Middleton Smith died last October at the Euclid street home. He was well known in dclentific circles here and was the author of more than a score of books upon scientific subjects. In 1882, Mr. Smith was an observer with the International Polar expedition at Point Barrow, Alaska. Brothers and sisters who survive Mrs. Smith are Gordon Van Hook, Moley and Cifford Smith and Mrs. Emma T. Morris and Mrs. Antoinette Van Hook Browne, all of whom live in_the West.
