REAL ESTATE. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. SATURDAY, AUGUST 28, 1926. REAL ESTATE. QUEER BULDIGS FEATIRENEN YORK S}mctures Have Strange ‘Forms as They Follow Shapes of the Streets. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 28.—Some of the most curiously shaped buildings in the world are located in New xors without one of them being planned as a freak, This condition arises from their having been planned according to streets which originally were laid along twisting ads or Indian trails. The Flatiron Building is the best known, with its knifelike cdge facing north, while the southern exposure is between converg- as a similarly very few blocks up to Times Square. Broadway bis anhattan Island from th southeast corner to the northwest. The remainder of the | main streets are laid in rectangu- lar squares, which s the odd- shaped lots to appear at each section. Times Square Formation. | inter- Times Square itsel? is formed by a Junction of this sort, and is anything but square, being rather more the | shape of a nond, as Broadway crosses Seventh avenue there ®om the east and then turns north. The building across One Hundred and Sixteenth street, a companion to this one, is built with the curve inward.. If the street could be removed and the two buildings joined they would dovetail. Skyline of Art.” The new buildings, in conforming with the building laws, have also cre- ated a skyline which in the case of each bullding is beautiful, but seldom noticed from the street. The buildings above the sixteenth or twentieth stories are pyramided to allow as much light as possible on the street, but the streets are so narrow that no_proper perspective can be ob- tained to view tije upper portions. One of the few buildings not so hid- den is the American Radiator Build- Ing, south of the Public Library grounds. This tower is done inorange and black stone, each insért of the pyramid marked so that when the tower is illuminated at night it has the appearance of a great pile of coals. g SIMPLY MADE RACK AIDS IN KITCHEN EFFICIENCY Three £zl Pieces of Wood Are Required for Shelf to Care for 0dd-Shaped Utensils. BALTIMORE, August 28—The board of directors of the local reat| estate board has decided to oppose the proposal of the directors of the Na- tlonal Association of Real Estate Boards to double the dues to the par- ent organization. LANDSCAPE PLANNING. (Continued from Sixteenth Page.) garden, where the addition of a sim- ple seat will make a perfect terminal feature; it may be near the center, where it will frame the central treat- ment, or it may be a casual incident not marking any point of the design, but of a very great value for its out- line and for its shadows on the grass. Equally happy is a slope in the ground, which allows the use of dif- ferent levels in the garden plan, for a garden divided into various units is always more interesting than one on the level. . It 1s not necessary to have any great change in grade. A differ- ence of a foot or 18 inches will allow two or three steps, which is quite enough to mark a division in the de- sign. ~ Whether the garden {s made in- formal, with natural slope and plant- ing in irregular lines to imitate natural growth, or whether it is of formal layout, with the drop in the ground changed to a definite line in the de- sign (either a planted bank or a stone retaining wall)’ will depend again en both the tastes of the ownerand on the character of 'his existing lot. If the lot is in itself beautiful, with groups of wild trees and outcroppings of ledge which give rugged outlines to the ground, he will probably prefer to develop it along the same lines, | § adding to the beauty of it instead of changing it. If it is bare in the be- | I8 ginning he will have the choice of a Chevy wild garden, if it fits In with the sur- rounding gardens of his neighbors’ or Chase can be planted off from them, or a garden of formal layout, informally planted, perhaps, which can be used as an outdoor room of the house. D.C.. English Cottages Attractive. Walls of the English cottage are thick; so the ingle-nook, with its built- in settees, painted in the rich colors of old wood, is characteristic. For the same reason, benches or chests often were built into the window recesses and these may be painted som brighter color. u‘«-’ These New Dunigan Homes Located at Buy With Confidence—Buy a Dunigan All-Brick Home | Selling!
