Byrd Boulevard. connecting the | National Capital with the northern en- trance to the Shenandoah National Park, Arlington County’s caravan of sponsors for the movement arrived here this afternoon prepared to tackle | a serious problem of organization confronting the projected “Richard Byrd Highway Association.” One of the biggest questions which was to be taken up. and one which had just been brought to the fore to. day. was the possible necessity of se- lecting a new name for the highway. This possibility loomed with the announcement in the press today by Gov. Harry F. Byrd of the disincli tion of his brother, the noted polar fiver, to have any highway named for him. Await Formal Notice. It was the consensus of opinion, however, that until some formal word had been received by the proponents of the new boulevard from Gov. Byrd or his brother plans will go forward without change. It was felt that in spite of Comdr. Byrd's modesty it would not be un- ethical to name the highway for him, anyway. Approximately 15 automobiles con- taining more than 75 citizens of Arlington and Fairfax Counties made the trip here this morning in good time, considering the muddy condi- tion of several stretches of road he- tween Upperville and Front Roval. The itinerary included Falls Church, Fairfax. Middleburg, Upperville and Delaptane, and in each of these towns the procession of automobiles, gaily decorated with appropriate banners, was augmented by additional “pil- grims.” Committee Meets l'uflL At Upperville the caravan was met by a committee of welcome from Front Royal, headed by Hugh E. Naylor, chairman; Prof. F. C. Melton, princi- pal of Randolph-Macon Academy, and Col. S. W. Millar. At the city limits of Front Royal the visitors were met by Mayor B. J. Hil- litte, Councilman Frank B. Evans and President R. K. Herr of the Front Roval Chanmer of Commerce. Luncheon was served the delegates immediately upon their arrival at Ran- dolph-Macon Academy, which was to be the headquarters of the conference. After lunch the visitors were taken for a tour of inspection of the north- ern section of the Shenandoah Na- tional Park. after which they were to return to the academy and undertake formal organization of the highway association. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Huddleston; a daughte A. H. Tackett; two sisters, Mrs. S. W. Daw and Mrs. Louis Kayser, and a brother, Jarret G. Huddleston.
