MOXDAY. AUGUST 9. 1926. “WAR BIRDS” The startling, uncensored diary of an American aviator ] The throbbing soul story of a boy-hero. He was killed before he could finish it . . . . . . . shot down behind the German lines. HROUGH a chain of strange coinci- dences, the Editors of LiBERTY are in possession of a revelatory diary which begins publication August 14. Its author is dead—shot down in combat by the Germans and buried by them behind their lines. » “"This is the intimate diary of flaming youth, told as a man talks to himself. It was never written for publication—it will be printed without editing or polishing. Real names, places, events are disclosed— its publication will cause an international sensation. ’ His trip overseas, his life in an English Ground School of aviation, his gay life in London, his battle stories in France—up to the tragic day of his death—all is told with an intimacy that is amazing. Among the famous artists who will illustrate “War Birds” is Clayton Knight, the friend and companion- in-arms of the young flyer who wrote this unparalleled narrative. Like the diary’s author, Knight was shot down in flames behind the German lines, but escaped — seriously wounded — from his burning plane and was taken prisoner. Heremained in German hospitals until after the Armistice. Celebrated artists who will contribute other pictures include Will Foster, Frank B. Hoffman, C. H. Tafts and Gerald Leake. Not all is grim war. Released of every-day conventions, our hero was a gay bird in a flock of gay birds—wine and women eased the hero’s numbered days. With death luring them to the supreme sacrifice, he and his companions seized the cup of life and drained it to the last drop. His days. and nights of revelry are not glossed over but divuiged in a thrilling man- ner which makes even “What Price Glory” seem somewhat tame. - alLiberty A Weekly for the Whole Family The most amazing war document ever published Yet with all its startling exposures, it is a true diary. While published anonymously, the Editors of LiBERTY have all the evi- dence of its authenticity. To begin the first paragraphs of this diary is to read it all.
