1 WRECK BLAME PUT ONDEAD ENGINEER I. C. C. Says Automatic Con- trol Would Have Blocked Pennsy Disaster. Again declaring that an’ adequate automatic train-stop or train-control system in use on the line would have prevented the accident, the Interstate Commerce Commission today placed the blame for the fatal accident on the Pennsylvanja Railroad ngar Gray, Pa., June 16 on Engineman Gordon of train 40, which collided with the Washington: Express froni Pittsburgh to Washington. Failure of Gordon to control his train, the commission be-} lieved, was due to sudden death or physieal incapacitation. The accident sccurred about 57 miles east of Pittsburgh, and resulted in the death of 11 passengers and 4 employes, and the injury of 82 pas- sengers and 4 employes. One pas- senger died later from injuries. Evidence taken by the commission n with the Public Serv- on of Pennsylvania indi- cates that Engineman Gordon, who was found dead after the accldent, met a peaceful rather than a violent death. That the hand of a dead man was at the throttle of the Pennsylvania flver when it plowed inte the rear end of the Washington Express was indicated by the commis: which said “the conclusion appe: to-be well founded that Engineman Gordon was dead or physicially incapacitated before the accident oceurred.” The commission said that had En- gineman McConnell of the second en- gine of train 40 realized a few seconds earlier that the train was not being properly controlled by Gordon in the leading engine, he could have brought his train to a stop in time to avert the accident, and had Flagman MacDon- ald of the Washington Express gone back as far as possible in the time available after his train came to a stop and hefore he was recalled, his fusees and torpedoes placed farther back would have given McConnell warning in time to stop his train be- fore striking the Washington train, or &t least in time to mitigate the “dis- astrous” consequences of the collision, The Washington Express had stopped because of a burst hose when train 40, known as the Cincinnati Limited, plowed into it. The pas- sengers killed were in the Watkins, a club car, and the Entriken, a Pullman car, of the Washington Express. - OSMENA, BACK FROM U. ., GETS OVATION IN MANILA Special Legislative Envoy Tells Natives Americans Sympathize With Independence Plea. By'the Associated Press. MANILA, P. I, August 3.—Sena- tor Sergio Osmena received an ova- tion here today upon his return from the United States, where he spent 10 months as a special envoy in the interests of Philippine legislation. One of the longest parades in the history of the islands escorted him through 2 triumphal arch to the Capitol, where he held a reception. Senator Osmena issued this state. ment: “My 10 months’ contact with rep- resentative elements in the United States enables me to assure our coun- trymen that the American people as a whole have the friendlest feeling toward us. They sympathize with our aspirations for {ndependence, They recognize fully the obligations contained in the preamble of the Jo_}x.;z,s law.” 5 e Jones law is the organic act of the islands. e TWO BITTEN BY SNAKE DURING VICIOUS ATTACK Man and Wife Struck by Reptile’s Fangs Before Son Kills It. Both Recovering. By the Associated Press. ROANOKE, Va., August 3.—A story of a viclous attack upon an entire family in Bedford County by a. poison- ous snake, which was killed only after two persons had fallen victims to its venom, was obtained here vesterday. Awakened early Sunday morning by the barking of his dog, Russell Miles, who lives in the Orrix vicinity, found a large copperhead moccasin coiled on the porch when he opened. the door. Before he could leap aside the reptile buried its fangs in the man's leg. Mr, Miles jumped back into the house and had succeeded in shaking himself free of the snake when Mrs. Miles, who answered his call, came in. Turning upon her the snake struck again. A grown son, who slept in another part of the house, was at- tacked as he came into the room, but avolded the reptile and finally suc- ceeded in killing it. Both Mr. and Mrs. Miles are reported recovering under the care of a physician. Special Dispatch to The Star.
