GRAND MARAIS, Minn —A dispute over the removal of a or sale” sign from a State road right-of-way is believed to have led to the fatal shooting of two high way patrolmen near here. The bhodles of Sigrud Ide, 30, and Alvin Toft, 21, Ide’s hands still clutching the sign they had been ordered to remove, were found at the roadside late yes- terday by a passing tourist. State laws forbid erection of any sign other than State road makers' on the right-of-way. Several times re cently John Westblade, 50 vears old, bachelor farmer, had placed a sign board near the road, advertising his farm for sale. Each time the patrol men had removed fit. Officers seeking Westblade after the killings yesterday found his cabin burned to the ground and several fruit trees cut down. Westblade was missing. U. S. LINE BANS WEDDINGS ON SHORT CHANNEL TRIP Favorite Voyage of Romance Spoil- ed as Order Says Skippers Are “Not in Form” Then. By the Assoctated Press PARIS, July 24.—Romance has re ceived a death blow on the English Channel by a decision of Capt Thomas Blau, director of operations of the United States lines, that skip pers will not be allowed to perform marriage ceremonies between Cher- bourg and Southampton, which in re cent months has been a favorite “Gretna Green" of the séa. Capt. Blau's decision was taken on the ground that skippers are “not in form, physically or mentally,” to per form marriage ceremonies on the eastbound voyage. During the past week 20 couples wanted to be married aboard Amer- ican liners between Cherbourg and Southampton, but they were refused on Capt. Blau's order, despite the loss to the company of their fares. July 24. Capt. Blau's decision apparently is an amplification of the instructions issued recently that there were to be no more weddings aboard United States line steamers. ‘When the general instructions were tssued, the skippers of vessels owned by the American Government ex pressed themselves as more than Gay | Pleased, as they had become extremely tired of sea weddings. The orders also raised the question of the validity of scores of sea mar riages. CONVICT IS RETURNED. Last of Seven Brought Back to Joliet Penitentiary.
