And Richenda went to meet it in wonderful frank purity—with the trusting innocence of a little child. After some hours of traveling in the rumbling East African train, they dis- mounted at a tiny wayside station. The boys they had brought with them speedily stored the camp equipment into primitive bullock carts and the three Europeans took their seats in a rickety, mule-drawn vehicle, which complied to no particular standard of carriage. It appeared to depend much upon various bits of wire and rope for the keeping of its shaky parts to- gether. Nevertheless, the Indian sta- tion master, from whom Fairways hired the thing, and who also supplied a driver who was supposed to be com- petent of guiding them to a good camping ground, demanded an exorbi- tant sum in_return for the loan of these commodities. The mules alternated between scampering along at a rattling pace which hid the bullock carts, following far behind, in a tremendous cloud of choking dust, and suddenly refusing to proceed at any rate at all. The more mangy animal of the two had a disturbing habit of attempting to sit on its haunches in the middle of the track—which could not by any shade of imagination be called a road—its companion was an adept at a certain type of side step which may occasion- ally be seen practiced in the modern ballroom. The two women found this progress 3 new and very trying experience They were glad when, half way up the slope of a grass-covered hillside, the vehicle was brought to a halt and the Kikuyu attendant, with an empty INSTALLMENT XVIIL L iz Richenda’s voice was such a thing to you again still felt that behind this profferef frank friendliness, and the more she “PLENTY KONGONI, PLENTY ZIMBA.” strove in this endeavor, the more that warning voice in her soul told her that Lucille Davenant was playing a game with her, and had been playing a game with her from the very moment they met. Mrs. Davensnt was entirely her gay charming self again. She exhibited a gentle solicitude for Richenda's wel- fare and her attempts to wipe out the memory of her unpleasant outburst were rather pathetic. “I've sent the cable,” she whispered, “and they have wired back that it's all right. 1 can have as much ant. In her heart she knew that it was not for the sake of Lucille Dave- nant that she had agreed to join this trip. Something new had come to Rich- enda Peterson, something _strange, which gave a little heightening color to her cheeks, something which at odd moments brought lilting snatches of song to her lips. She was gning to analyze that some- thing. She “as content to let the fate that had brdught her to this unknown country %ead her blindfold on. Some- where ' front there lay a destined end. The four natives whom they had brought from Nairobl proved willing and experi- enced henchmen and the small canvas safari tents were quickly erected in a sheltered hollow half way down the round bosomed windswept hiliside.
