REAL Landscape Planning For the Home Qwner BY ROSE Ilm'. Landscave The question often arises, what are ground covers? The world is most ex- pressive because it says just what it means. A ground eover is anything that covers the ground. The werd is usually applied growing plants, but is also applicablo te a covering of gravel or paving stone or brick. We will therefore consider the subject in two parts: first, mineral ground covers, and second, vegetable ground :"&? Bach has a worthwhile place In these days when covered porches are largely giving way te paved ter- races, the value of some permanent paving material which will stand hard wear is well known. Under cer- tain conditions there is nothing more n.nmuve than a grass terrace; the reen is restful to the eyes, the well ut turf is comfortable to walk on, and it blends into the hadoclm without a note of formality. But, unfortunately there are dis tages on.the other side of the ledger. Comfortable as the grass terrace 1s under the proper conditions, it is not always in perfect condition. After a rain it is slow to dry, while the masonry terrace rapidly becomes usable.” -And dry weather is quite as disastrous as wet, since the grass dries out and needs constant atten- tion to" enable it to keep its fresh- ness and beauty. It is not surprlslnl that for the mueh used terrace, the terrace that must take the place of a porch, the first cheice usually goes to paving of some sort. Whetlier brick or stane is chosen is generally a matter of/en- virenment and of lecal supply. If there isa brick chimney to the house, & brick terrace may be needed to emphasize the same material. 1f the terrace is to be wide and in front |, of a large house, an even bluestane flagging may be used. And if the house is small and an informal char- acter is dexired, irregular pa: stone laid at random is an excel choice. This random uv may be laid in a terrace with a straight edge or may be used most informally in the grass or to carpet & much spot in the woods. When hmk or the even bluestone flagging is it will be laid in concrete or in sand, with joints, softened sometimes with creeping mosses, either aceidental or introduced. ‘With the irregular stone paving one has greater leeway in the use of plant materials to soften its edges. The in- dividual plants for this use will be taken up next weelk, but a word be said here in regard to their use the paved terrace. They take place of a decoration, which adds in- terest to the paving. but must placed that it does mot in any interfere with its use. This means that the plants chosen must mw h- small enough to walk on or that they must be center of the area, se t net in the way, and serve trim the edges. planting. When it is more there may be more interest in the pav- ing itself. Careful attemtion will have to be given to the character of the material, whether stone or brick, in which .the paving is carried out. There are various kinds of brick suit- able for the purpose, but a general suggestion may be made. Select briek which is not too mechanieal in sur- face, molded. rather than wirecut brick, wherever it ecan be ured, and lay it with some w ion of color, letting the difference appear fir- regularly unless a definite pattern is desired. It is peasible to work out amusing patterns by using brick of different colors or by combining brick and tile or brick and stone. In select- ing stone the same attention should be given to texture and to celor, for not all stone is beautiful, nor is all stoneharmonjous.
