18 CROP SURPLUSES HELD TEMPORARY Expert Declares Growing Population Increasing De- mands on Farms. Br the Associated Press. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va., Juns 10.—The talk of agricultural surpluses conveys the impression| that thers is now no need, or in the| future will there ever be need, of! increased production, Sidney B. Has-| kell, director of the Massachusetts| Agricultural Experiment station at| Ambherst, told delegates at the closing | session of the second annual con- vention of the National Fertilizer As- sociation here today. Tointing out that such an impres- sion was erroncous, Mr. Haskell said the population of the United States was increasing at the rate of 15,000, 000 persons every 10 vears, and that eventually the Nation's farms would have to bear the burden of caring for many more people. Mr. Haskell predicted that a sue-| cessfon of poor crop years, or a na-| tional famine was bound to hit this! country eventually, and for this rea-| son the Nation should protect its food sourca. Four experts from the soil improve- ment bureans of the association ap- peared before the convention and gave short reports on conditions in their distriets, HUERTA DENOUNCES POLICIES OF CALLES Declares He Took Stand in 1920 Against Religious and Agrarian Systems. By the Amsociated Press SAN ANTONIO, June 10.—Adolfo da 1a Huerta, former provisional President of Mexico and leader of a revelt against President Alvaro Obre £on. attacked the religious and agra- rian policias of President Calles in an interview here last nizht. It was his first public expression of opinion since his revolt falled and he fled from Mex. iro In 1924, “When 1 was selected provisional President {n 1920 T issued a proclama tion guaranteeing the freedom of re. liglous thought in Mexico and freedom for all teachings." said de la Huerta. “T am still of that opinfon. “During mv administration many refugee ministers of all denominations returned to Mexico and were wel- comed. They opened schools, which were badly needed by the Mexican peo- ple, and ‘they continued tn exercise thair right of religious worship and teachings until the present adminis- tration took office “When I launched the revolt In Vera Cruz against President Obregon n 1923 1 issued a proclamation. In which was iIncluded a plank on the agrarian question. 1 stated then that land whieh was to be expropriated un der the agrarian law should be pald for In cash. I was not in favor of taking a single acra without paving the ownaers thereof for it in cash.” Huerta said he was visiting friends here and that he expected to remain untll Saturday. He said he was pre- paring a detailed statement on his stand on the present problems of Mexicn. It =trikes the T'rich Herald that ®ome people want the word “‘ohey" taken ant of the laws as well as the! marriage ceremony. | BAND CONCERTS.
