BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 26.—The upward movement continued on the Stock Ex- change today. It was more emphatic in certain quarters, such as the oils and steels. than it had been on the two preceding days. Interest in the oila centered more particularly on the shares of the com panfes where merger negotiations are #aid 1o be pending. The steel shares were helped by the midweek reviews, which were rather more cheerful than they have been for some time Among the oils. Atlantic Refining was one of the most active. Marland Oil was another which attracted a good deal of attention. The Street was full of gossip about a consolidation of these (wo companies, but there was no conffrmation from any authovita- tiva source. Other oil shares that came in for considerable attention at rising prices included General Asphali, Pan-American Petroleum elass B, Standard Oil of California, Pure Oil. General Petroleum and ~California Petroleum. Steel Shares Stronger. Steel shares were helped by the more optimistic references in the mid- week review 1o the outiook for the steel industry and the advance of §2 & ton in steel bars by the United States Steel Corporation. New bookings. Once the buying 2ot under way in this issue it spread 1o the independents and gains of a point to three points were recorded in Republic Iron & Steel, Gult States and Sloss Sheffield Central Leather issues were out- standing strong spots among indus trial speclalties, the preferred getting t0 53 where it compared with the prev- tous closing of 477;. Buying of this {ssue accompanied reports that under the revised comiemplated reorganiza tion plan the preferred stock would fare better than oviginally expected. Some time ago it was reported that under the original plan the preferred would recetve three-quarters of a share of new preferred and one share of common while the common would re. vaive share for share. Central Leather common went along with the senior stock. but the rise was not as pro nounced. Texas Land Trust Jumps. Texas Land Trust had another of fts characteristic sharp fluctuations, changing hands at 920. as against the previous closing of 860. ‘There was apparently nothing new 1o account for the renewed up-swing. Because of the fact that the stock is closely held and there is very little outstanding, a rise of such magnitude in a high-priced issue of this type means little to the general publi Railway shares continued fo re- apond to the favorable showing both in gross and net for April operations which continued to come to hand to- day. Special strength came into the market for New York Central, Atchi- son and Missouri-Pacific preferred. while higher prices were reached in Raltimore and Ohlo and Wabash pre- ferred “A.” Railway equipment of the type of Baldwin Locomotive and American Locomotive were carried romewhat higher, but the advance was not as pronounced as vesterday. NEW YORK, May 26 (P).-“An increase of $2 a ton in the Steel Cor- poration’s price for steel bars, ef- fective May 26, centers attention on that section of the market, following a brief intervai in which sales were commonly made at $1.90. Strictly invest ment obligations were steady but made little or no further advance. Prices are now so high that investors hestitate to pay them, while holders refuse to make concessions, produc ing more or less of a deadlock. The real leaders were the New York City tractions, the olls and some of the junior railroads. In the trac tion group thers was animated buy- ing of Interboro 7 per cent notes following the April earnings state- ment which was the most favorable since December. Crossing 96, the s made & new 1926 top. Manhattan Rallways 4s went along and also mude a new high at 68. The demand for Third Avenue refunding 4s and ad Justment 5s held quotatfons firm and there was more investment inquiry for Brooklyn Manhattan 6s and Hud son and Manhattan incomes Among the oils, strength was shown both by the convertible bonds and by those selling on an investment yield basis. Pan-American Petroleum 65 were the leaders in the first named class and the Sinclair 7s and Union Ofl of California 6s in the second. St Louts-San Francisco obligations, chief- Iy the adjustments and the incomes, were the favorites in the rails.
