Special Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, May 22.—The feature of the hond market today was the suc- cess of the new offering of $35,000,000 Brazil 61gs, maturing 1957, and priced at 90 to yield over 7.30 per cent. It is rather unusual to market so large an issue on Saturday, but subscrip- tions came in quickly and while no figures were obtainable, it was estl- mated early In the day that allotments would range around 50 per cent. The competition of the new bond resulted in fractional recession in Brazil 7s and 8s, but the losses were not important. Other foreign bonds were irregular. Italian 7s were in de- mand, but the French issues showed no corresponding improvement and German fell away from the new high made earlier in the week. In the domestic list there was again some pressure on sugar issues. Eastern Cuba Sugar 7%s sold off in sympathy with the sharp decline in Cuba Cane obligations yesterday. There was some selling of the latter for future deliv- ery a little below Friday's close. Punta Alegre 7s were a shade lower. The oil bonds, which had heen so prominent early in the week, felt the effects of profit-taking, but in general were well supported. Armour of Dela- ware 5138 and Armour of Illinois 4128 were not_disturbed by the passing of the dividend on Armour A stocks. Botany Consolidated Mills 6138 sagged further. NEW YORK; May 22 (#).—Gulf Oil Corporation has completed well No. 232 in Caddo Parish, La., flowing 1,400 barrels dally. It is located on one of the oldest leases of the corporation, comprising several thousand acres, of which only a small portion has been developed. The corporation's new re- finery at Bayonne, N. CHICAGO, May 22.~Wheat prices turned downward today in the early dealings, traders glving attention to rains in Canada and to increased offer- ings of wheat to be shipped promptly to Chicago. Opening unchanged to % ir. wheat underwent a material set- back all around but then scored gains. Defeat of the Haugen bill at Wash- ington weakened corn values, which started unchanged to 3; down and later showed a moderate decline. Oats were easy. Provisions also drooped. Rallies which took place after the the wheat market were hased more or less on a suggestion from a trade leader that the defeat of the Haugen bill is likely to bring about a4 more general foreign demand for wheat. He said it was reported that Kuropean purchasers had been holding back hoping that the United States would dump surplus grain cheap. less favorable crop reports today from Minnesota and South Dakota tended at times to give some incentive to buvers. Bank Clearings Growing. Bank clearings continue to reflect 2 larger volume of payments through the banks than at this time last vear total exchanges this week at all lead ing cities in the United States heing $9.011.260,000, an increase of 2.4 per cent over the third week of May. 1925 At New York City bank clearings this week were $5.408,000.000, and were in excess of a vear ago by only 1.4 per cent, while at all leading cities out side of Netw York the amount was $3.603.260, 000, or 3.8 per cent larger than last vear. Most of the leading cities of the country continue to show gains over a vear ago. among them being Chicago, Boston, Pittshurgh St. Louis, Louisville, Seattle and Port land, Oreg. On the other hand, bank clearings this week are less than thev were last vear at this time at Phila delphia and Detroit. North American Expanding. The Cleveland Electric Tlluminating Co.. a_subsidiary of the North Amer jean Co., has purchased an electric light and power piant serving several - towns outside of Cleveland. The Great Western Power Co., also a sub- sidiary. has applied to the California Railroad Commission for the right to take over hy purchase of stock the Napa Valley Electric Co.
