PARIS, May 19.—The movies and improved housing conditions, in the opinfon of Prof. Labbe of the Acad- emy of Medicine, have done more to decrease alcoholism among French workmen than any other agencies. academy yesterday, declared that the alcoholic ‘danger was just as formi- dable today as in ‘1913, and that he en- visaged legal, fiscal and moral means to combat. it. Young workmen, he said, drink less than older craftsmen because they have formed the habit of spending their evenings in movie houses in- stead of saloons. Hie praised the war- time legislative measures curtailing absinthe drinking und limiting the ASK FOR ALLEN’'S FOOT-EASE for TIRED.ACHING FEET | Tuning Coils and Transformers. Part HIL As far as their external fields are concerned, inductance coils act very much in the same way as the mag- WNYC nets described in vesterday's article. .wans The first in the list is the solenoid type b | of coil, shown in Figure 7. This coll comparatively great. The torold type of coil, shown in Figure 8, follows the line of the horse- shoe and closed ring magnet. The coll itself is wound on a cylinder in the same manner as the solenoid type, but after belng wound it is hent around in the form of a ring and this has the effect of constraining the field of the magnet in a manner similar to the action that takes place in the horse- shoe and ring magnet. The result bending the coil around in this way is to cut down the external fleld to a minimum and thus eliminate the effect of the magnetic field of the coil on nearby colls and circuits. In the quadraformer type of coil, shown in Figure 9, the general scheme shown in Figure 5 of yesterday's ar- ticle is followed. In this arrangement four colls are connected in series, and placed 80 as to form the bars of a {square. This does not exactly form a ‘losed fleld coil, but the external field is limited to the space between the L |ends of the adjacent coile Company . WEAD | “Binoculars” Coil Explained. The next popular «ype of coil is that usually known as a “binoculars.” This type of coil consists of two coils connected in series, with unlike poles adjacent, as shown in Figure 10. Although any scheme of taxing radio listeners by the Federal Government has been repeatedly decrled by Secre- tary Hoover, the radio receiver is, nevertheless, being viewed as a pos- sible source of revenue for State or local governments. One of the requests for lnhwnmllnn] regarding the legality of such methods of taxation was reccived by the de- parfment from one of the layger cities on the Pacific Coast and another from a county of a Middle Western State.
