D. ¢, SATURDAY, LEE HEIGHTS HOME 'HAS IDEAL SETTING _ (Continued from Page Seventeen.) _ beautiful outlook. In this house the arrangement of rooms is ideal. Of special interest is the main plan, which shows not only the arrange ment of the house but that of the entire lot as well. Too often, how- ever, the limitation of funds or other reatons lands the house on the lot Inside of four stakes and leaves the adjustment of the grounds to chance. The result is frequently the loss of opportunity to accomplish desirable plans, or expense in their accom- plishment which might just as well have been avoided. . In this ground plan, which is the first general study, and which will be followed by detalled revisions. there is a public lawn, a private garden. a garage space and a service yard. The garden is to the south and east. with the garage forming a northern protec- tlon; the service yard is to the north, screened by the garage and the house. It will be noted that no effort was made to hide the garage back of the house, entailing a needlessly long roadway. It i= not necessary to hide any such_element in a composition. There is nothing more charming and picturesque than the New England &roupings of houses, woodshed and barn all connected in rambling fash- fon. Here a picket fence serves to connect the building into a composite whole. Service Connecti A definite service connection s pro vided from the street to the kitchen door, not passing through the garden, but around the garage. Likewise the | garage 8 set hack far enough from the ot line ta permit of tree enframe. | ment. Especially interesting in this scheme is the use of different levels. When zrades permit, such levels have as creat possibilities as the intermediate levels in a house. The placement of « houge on a terrace. as in this case, always gives added dignity and fitness. Detalls of the progress on this house will be given from time to time. - 2 New Rinsing Plan. Rinsing in one of the latest mechani cal devices to aid the housewife in her clothes washing is accomplished by the action of the agitator in clear rins ing water of the desired temperature If one wishes to hlue during the rin: | ing aperation. the hluing may he mixed vith the rinsing watér and the agita or put in motien in the usual manner. Much of the success of warm-air heating depends on supplying an ade- quate amount of fresh air to the bot tom of the furnace casing. It Is neces- sary, for example, when the entire supply is to be taken from outside, that the volume of the supply be at least two-thirds that to he circulated he heated [U. S. LEADS NATIONS IN BUILDING HOMES Half of Every Construction Dollar Is Spent for Residential Purposes. As a homehuilding Natien, the United States leads the world. That half of every dollar {s spent for new construction is supported by mtatis- ties compiled for 1925, which show that 62 per cent of the total space constructed during the vear was for residential purposes. Five years ago only 34 per cent of the new space was residential in character. Since then, the peak of the housing erisix there has heen a steady increase of dwelling building of every character.
