FINANCIAL. TENDENCY TO 546 Weakness of French Issues Swiss 5 1-2s Strong. Features of Trading. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. NEW YORK, March 24.—The bond market today was a two-slded affair. Strictly high-grade investment issues wera in good demand, but with a few exceptions everything from the mid- dle grade down to the speculative obligations was heavy to weak. The supply of seasoned underlying rallroad bonds selling on & 4.76 to a 6 per cent basis was not equal to the demand. In many instances higher prices were bid for blocks of such f{ssues than would be paid for the odd lots. The Liberty 3%s, the entirely tax- exempt issue, made another new 1926 high. Weakness in French bonds was the featurs of the foreign group. New lows for the year were established by French 7s, 7138 and §s. Belgian bonds suffered in sympathy. Even the Ger- man 7s, which have been one of the steadlest issues in the whole foreign group, barely held their ground. One strong forelgn {ssue was Swiss 5is, which duplicated the new "high first made a day or so ago. In the domestic industrials and util- ity list there were two exceptions to the trend. One was Manlla Electric 7%, which ran up to 112, making a new high. The other was Cuban Do- minican Sugar 7%s, which appeared to be the object of a special buying operation. The close on Tuesday was 9415, but the bonds sold above 97 to- day. Elsewhere, however, prices sagged. Among the rafls, Chesapeake and Ohlo convertible §s were down 3% points. WHEAT PRICES BEAR MATERIAL SETBACKS Optimistio Crop Reports Bring on Selling—Corn and Oats "Relatively Strong. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, March 24—With op- timistic crop reports at hand from practically the entire domestic belt, wheat values took an early swing downward today. Notwithstanding that Liverpool quotations came higher than due, sellers here were in @ majority, and new buyving power appeared scant. Word of high winds in Nebraska failed to act as a stim- ulus. Chicago opening prices changed to 3 lower, May, new, 1.565 to 157% and July 133% to 1.36, were followed by material setbacks all around. Corn and oats displayed relative strength. Receipts of corn here to- day were meager, only §9 cars. After opening 7 off to % up, May 72%, the corn market underwent a slight general sag. Oats started unchanged to 3% higher May 39% to 39%, and later eased back somewhat. Provisions held about steady, aided by comparative firmness of corn. WHEAT— May (rew) ay (old)..
