Following a conference of the offi- cials of the corporation, officials of the Department of Commerce and representatives of the 12300 com- plainants of the superpower broad- casting from WJZ, it has been de- cided that the station should be given additional time for its experiments. According to engineers in charge of the broadcasting from the super- power station, it is hoped that in another three months all or most of the interference caused at present in a 10-mile radius of the plant can be eliminated. Interference caused by the early test programs from the experi- mental stations within a range of from 10 to 15 miles already has been rectified, it was said. Tt also was pointed out that whereas a comparatively small number of lis- Coon-Sanders teners have been reblanketed by the Bound Brook programs, hundreds of thousands of listeners in the Middle West and on the Pacific Coast have expressed approval of the experiment and have notified the Radio Corpora- tion that they have been able to hear for the first time direct from New York City. With its experimental license re- newed, it is understood that the Radio Corporation plans to continue its superpower transmission of several of its national features, principally the ongressional Radio Forum which has Leen {naugurated at Washington and which will introduce two members of Congress to the listeners of the coun- try every week in a debate on one of the outstanding controversial ques- tions in the Senate and the House. Other features which are expected to be bro}dcasl on the 50-kilowatts are the New York Philharmonic So- ciety concerts and the concerts of the United States Marine Band and Or- chestra which are relayed to Bound El;)lok from station WRC at Wash- igton. —_— Station Increases Power. WIS, at Chicago, 345 meters, is now operating on 5,000 watts, having been given permission by the Department of Commerce to jump its power to the present broadcasting limit. . n‘w KFBC, at San Diego, Calif., is operating on 215.7 meters. _ {that Soviet Rus Soldiers. FIFTEEN MINUTES OF RADIO EACH DAY BY JOSEPH CALCATERRA. AlL Rights Regerved. Repro. Prohibited. Vacuum Tube Filament Resistances. Part IIL With the gradual increase of the number of tubes in radio receivers and the perfection of the tubes to the point of uniformity that makes it possible for a large number of tubes to per- form efficiently under the same condi- tions of fllament voltage and current, | the tendency has been toward the simplification of controls by eliminat- ing individual control of filament volt age and current by the use of separate rheostats for each tube. This has re sulted in a system in which a number of tube filaments are connected in par llel and are controled by a sir rheostat IMigure 1 shows an arrangement in which three tube filaments are nected in parallel and a single rheo stat placed in series with the parallel combination is used to control the entire group of filaments. E=1R Fig2 I-%& Fig3 R-4p | The electrically equivalent circuit is | 1 | i con Porches w Dinets, built-in china Quiet elevator, tiled corridors House phones in all Figl | 1‘ and showers | shown in figure . The circuit of rates figure 2 can be reduced to a funda mental or simplified circuit by subs tuting a single resistance for the three | resistances connected in parallel. In | figures 1 and 2, “A,” “B,” and “C” represent the resistances of the in- dividual tube filaments and “B" repre- sents the resistance of the rheostat. | When resistances are connected in | series, the total resistance of the com- | bination is equal to the sum of the resistances. In other words total re- sistance in a series circuit is equal to ! {&ll the resistances added together. In | a parallel circut, however, the total ! resistance is arrived at in a different way because connecting two resist- ances in parallel provides an easier path for the current and reduces the resistance of the system. i Finding Total Resistance. The formula for finding the total re- sistance of a combination of resist- ances connected in parallel is shown in figure 3, where “R’ represents th: total resistance and “R1,"” ‘R4,” etc., represent the individual re- sistances of the resistance elements {that are connected in parallel. If the resistances that are connected in par- allelzguch as the filaments of the tubes Whown in figure 1 and the equivalent resistances “A,” “B" and “C” in figure 2 are equal to each other, the total resistance is equal to the reciprocal of the number of re- | sistances connected together, multi- plied by the resistance of a single ele- ment. In the case shown In figures 1 and 2 for instance there are three equal resistances, “A,” “B” and “C" con- nected in parallel. The resistance of each is 50 ohms. The reciprocal of three is 1-3, which multiplied by 50 gives the total resistance of the com- { bination between points “X" and “Y" as approximately 16.66 ohms. Passes Through Filament. To operate the tubes properly, a current of 0.06 amperes must pass through each fllament. This means that & current three times that amount must be supplied in the cir- cuit. Now use Ohm’s law again to find the amount of resistance re quired in the circuit to pass a cur- |rent of 0.18 amperes with a voltage source of 413 volts. The resistance | is equal to the voitage divided by the current of 41; divided by 0.18, which gives a total resistance required of 25 ohms. Since the filaments supply a total resistance of 16 ohms, the bal- ance of 9 ohms must be supplied by & rheostat connected in series with | the circuit in the manner shown in figures 1 and 2. The nearest standard rheostat is the 10-ohm rheostat. The | same method can be used to find out the resistance required to control any | number of tubes. The procedure is to first find the resistance of each filament; then find the total resistance of the tubes connected in parallel; then the total current in amperes re. quired in the circuit: then the total resistance required and finally sub- tract the resistance of the tubes from the total resistance required to find | the rheostat resistance required.
