Shooting from the seventeenth (or thirty-fifth) tee, Jim and Jock got good drives. But after the second | shots the gallery was left deeply sur- prised, believing that both players | bad gone off their game. Jock’s mashie shot went over the green and into a deep bunker at the left side. Jim's ball fell considerabi short of the green. The general im- pression was that hoth contestants were beginning to feel ‘the strain of the close struggle. But, although Hutchinson's shot was an error, that of Barnes was 19 b car; for many months it has stood the most exhaustive tests at General Motors’ great Proving Ground in Michigan. The Pontiac “Six” is produced and mar- keted by the Oakland division of General Motors as a companion to the Oakland Six. Itisanother example of the quality and value made possible by a group of strong companies 3y halving the hole he would have gone to the next tee still 1 up. Then he would only have needed to halve the eighteenth hole to have beaten me. In other words, I think his tactics at the finish should have been defensive, Barnes Played Short. “If his ball had held to the green 1 should have tried to place my see- ond there, too. But, convinced he was in the trap, I felt sure he would need one stroke to get out and two putts, at least, to get down. He might take two strokes to get out of the trap and have to hole a 8. el CUEISTS PLAY TONIGHT. The seventeenth hole at Siwanoy measured about 400 yards, calling to: a drive and a mashie to the green. After the drive, the falrway rises at a considerable grade to an elevated |green, so that the player, pitching |up over the slope, cannot see what happens to his ball after it finishes its roll on the green. The traps guarding the green con- sisted of a big bunker along the left side which bent around a bit to the rear and a deep pit at the front cor- ner on the right. Green Was Sloping. The green was so constructed that it sloped from right to lett. On a play to the green one would natural- ly shoot to the right, so that the ball would roll toward the cup in- stead of away from it. But in 8o doing there was always danger of getting in the pit. On the other hand, a ball pitched left of the cup might easily be shunted off into the bunker on that side. By getting a longer drive than Jock, Barnes was able to watch his play to the green. He saw his op- ponent's ball drop a lttle to the left of the cup, almost hole-high. “I decided to play just short ‘of the green, trusting to an accurate chip shot to get me a 4, but con- scious that even a 5 might win the hole. “Well, my play was successful. My pitch and chip left me with a short nutt. Jock got out of the bunker| nicely, but had to sink a 15-foot putt ' for par. He failed and I won the hole. This squared us and when I took the eighteenth, 5 'and 6, the championship was mine.” when it is considered that there Is no greater chip shot player in the game than he, it is easily seen he had good reason to expect his strat- egy to succeed.
