BALTIMORE, October 27.—Married women who are teaching in the Balti- more public schools will be required to take a leave of absence without pay for at least two years following the birth of a child, according to a rule to that effect just adopted by the school board. Until June, 1924, the only marrled teachers who were acceptable as teach- ers were widows and women who had been legally separated from their hus- bands. When @ woman married she was required by the school board to resign. After " the legislature had passed a bill permitting marrted women to teach, numbers of teachers married and continued to hold their positions. The rule was made, it is sald, be- cause it was felt that a woman with a small child could not give the proper attention to the children in her classes. If she were a real mother, interested in her offspring, it was felt, | her attention would be distracted from her class by thought of her baby at| home. TRUCK PLAYS HAVOC.
