He was usually the first person there, but on thig morning he was earlier than usual, for he knew that the business of the day would be uncommon. He had scarcely hunz up his coat and hat when the telephone rang. “Is that you, Frank?" “Yes “This 's Henry.” “Hello Henry, what's on vour mind so early in the morning? “Iarly nothin’. He could not even have an onest broken bone. The Injury from which he now suf- ered was, in short, almost wholly fake. It is true that when Mr. Browning picked him up and carried .im to the curbstone in front of the Hotel Barclay he was suffering. His nkie had been twisted. It continued to be painful while he traveled home- ward in the taxi. Before he reached his apartment, however, he knew per- tectly well that the injury was not serious, but he had m de up his mind to use it for his own purposes. He desired to see as little as possible of Stunley before the latter’s departure. av e, either, to a tem. porary separation from his flancee. He knew thut as ofien as he saw her she would revert to the subject of Nina Morgan—a matter which he had no desire to reopen unless driven to it. Consequently, after he had sent for his doctor, who dingnosed a simple strain, he tock to his bed and nnounced that one of the small bones of hs foot had been broken. He could not entirely avoid Stanley, of course—the lutter came Lo see him twice before his departure. But on one occasion all the time was con- ned by details of the transfer of the firm’s ownership, and upon the other Waterman appeared to be in such pain that Stanley mercifully cut his vis't short. Nor could he wholly 1d his In the four or five days in vhich he thought it necessary to kee o his apartment she came to him twlce,—once with her father and nce with a girl fren? I offered to go along and take care of him, but he didn’t eeem no ways grateful.” What did he say?” Near as I can recollect he told me to go to hell. Well, that's all. Well, all right. Tl get the xlckem»fllppo. drome, probly. So long.” Wilson reflected. He had come into the office with the impulse strong within him to let Stanley know that he had seen Waterman dining with Nina Morgan. He could not have {said why he felt that Stanley ought to know it, but feel it he did. His common sense told him that Stanley would probably think it none of his business, and on the face of it, it was just that—none of his business. Yet the impulse persisted. He was still pondering the matter when the tel ne rang again, and a_voice sai ‘Office of Stanley and Waterman? Yes." Mr. Stanley in yet?” ‘No—expect him_shortl This is Mr. Waterman's _valet speaking. Mr. Waterman would like you to say to Mr. Stanley when he comes In that he has had an accident. ! He was knocked down by a taxi y afternoon. One of the small bones in his right foot is broken. The doctor says he will be confined to his | bed for a weel As Wilson hung up the receiver Stanley came in. Wilson told him at once. Lord!” said Stanley. “Well, it might have been worse. The streets of this town are getting to be more danger- ous than a battlefield. Poor Rolly. I must go and see him bye-and-bye. 1t will make it a little more difficult settling up *he business. We'll have to take a lot of the papers to his apartment. However, we'll put it through all right. And eo it was donme. Stanley left | the Grand Central Station at 2:45 | the following Wednesday afternoon, bound for Tibet. He salled from San Francisco on the steamship Resolute at ten o'clock the following Monday morning. He did not see Dorls Colby again. He called at her house on the Tues- day before he left New York, at an hour when he knew she was almost always in. He was a little surprised when the butler told him that she was not_at home. “I'm sorry not to see her, Barker,” he said. ‘“‘Be sure to tell her that. I shall not have another chance, as 1 leave New York tomorrow after- noon for a long journey.” Stanley was on the whole relieved. He had no wish to see Doris again. For him the final interview was bound to be a painful thing. He could have no notion that it would also have been painful to her. He was glad that he was able to avoid it. From San Francisco he sent her a2 farewell tel “Good-bye,” it read, “and all the good luck In the world to both my pals.” That was on a Monday morning. On the following Tuesday morning Wilson, running hastily over the pages of his morning paper, came upon the following paragraph: “Mr. Alexander Colby of 1086 Fifth avenue, announces the engagement of his daughter, Miss Doris Colby, to Mr. Rollin Waterman of 587 Park avenue.” All the implications of this an- nouncement now rushed across Wil- son’s brain. Instantly he knew that | his impluse had been sound. ~He should have told Mr. Stanley of his meeting with Waterman and Nina Morgan at the Hotel Barclay. Now it was too late. Things must take their course. Yet they should not take their course entirely without his supervision He made up his 'mind to tha CHAPTER IX It should have become fairly obvi- ous by mow that Jim Stanley’s con- ception of Rollin Waterman as simple, direct, ingenuous sportsman, had many points not consonant with the truth. Waterman'’s I'fe, in fact, had { the boy choir, beautifled t | of the church, and | of admittance, | sence was not noted by any other | his_poise, sostpone the disagreeable subject, and | rompted by repeated requests from Dor’s he presently informed her that Nina Morgan had left the office, re. moved from her former address, and that the private detectives whom he | called in had been unuble to trace her. | The Waterman-Colby wedding was what is called a Society ev That | IS to say. it took place in Bar- | ‘holomew's Church under the ausplces | of the bishop of the diocese and the rector of the parish, harmonized by the ritual | sed by un wssembly of persons whose names were prominent in the social and business life of the city. 1t was witnessed also by Nina Mor. witne gan. She insisted on having a card and_ though her pre-| of the hundreds who were In the church, | she was to the bridegroom the most conspicuous person there. Despite as he stood at the altar with Doris at his side, he felt like ! a man who rather expects to be shot ! in the back at any moment. But! though Nina's presence was noted | by no one inside the church, with the | distinguished exception of the bride | groom, it was distinctly observed by | one of the numerous indfviduals who | crowded the sidewalk outside the door to watch the wedding party as it came from the church. Frank Wilson was not invited to the | wedding, but he went, none the less, | as far s he could go without a card of admission, and he was, to least, interested when he saw ome cut. He had noted with Nina sur- prise the withdrawal of that young |\ woman from the office, but its exact stgnificance he could not fathom. Th event had occurred before the publica- tion of the Waterman-Colby engage- ment. That announcement had inte ested Wilson even more keenly in view of the continued absence of Miss Mo gan, so that he made bold one day, shortly after, to speak to Waterman | about ft. ““Oh, yes,” gone for good “May I ask if you dismissed her?" inquired Wilson. | “Oh, no.” responded Waterman. “got another job somewhere, I be- lieve. Glad she's gone. Been getting a little careless lately.” Now Wilson reflected to himself that Wall Street business men are seldom seen dining in an obscure up- ith secre who have etting carele: aid Waterman, “she’s And now, as he stood on the that gathered about the striped ,n\nhv;; that led from the | portals of St. Bartholomew's to the | curbing, and noted the exit of Ninu| amid the throng of wedding guest knowing that the entrance to church had been strictly by card— he reflected again that the weddings | of Wall Street busines men are not| commonly attended by secretaries who have been “getting careless lately” and whose employers are glad to see them leave the office. He regretted more deeply than ever | that he had not followed his original | impulse to let Stanley know what he had seen at the Hotel Barclay. In fact, all his protective instincts to- ward the man who had done so much for him were roused. But he could only wait and watch. The wedding journey was brief, be- ing limited to six weeks at Palm Beach on account, sald the society paragraphs, of the extensive busines interests of the bridegroom. The&el business interests were practically in | the hands of Wilson during these s’ weeks; that is to say, they were man aged precisely as Stanley would have managed them had he been there Upon Watermun's return he tried to replace Wilson as promptly as possible. but the men whom he trled out as Wilson’s successors turned out to be somewhat unsatisfactory, even by Waterman's not altogether elevate standards. Consequently Wilson hel on. Now that his word was law in the business, Waterman began to al low his instincts free play. At heart | a gambler, it was not long before | he had pretty thoroughly identified the interests of the business with hi own personal Gommitments in the Street, a thing which had been im possible as long as Stanley had re mained at the helm. It s true in those days Waterman had managed to involve himself in varlous specu lative enterprises which turned ou badly, but they remained his own. The position of the firm was in no way affected by them. Now it was different. Wilson had ventured to file vari- ous respectful protests from time to time as he noted the course which events were taking. His objections had been waved aside—pleasantly at) first. but finally in a way which silenced him. “Wlison,” said Waterman, occasion of his last protest, have '“2pt you in the office to assist me, not advise me. If you're content with ‘h's arrangement, I shall be glad tc have you stay until I can replace you If_not. vou had better go at once.” (Continued in Tomorrow's Star.) SEEKS MISSING BROTHER.
