His school training is taken up step by step from the very elementary subjects up through the more difficult phases of the subjects which he s studying. If you attempt to teach a boy algebra before he has a fair concep- tion of simple arithmetic, you will not go very far in your attempt to teach him subjects for which he is not fitted. The same holds true in radio. Do not make the mistake of letting him attempt to build a 5 or 6-tube set right off the bat. Make him start with a simpler set of the 1 to 3 tube variety and work bim up gradually to the larger sets. If you use care in select- ing the parts, there will be very lit- tle wastage, as all the parts, such as sockets, condensers, transformers, etc. used in the small set can later be used in_the larger set. The experiment is well worth trying. Besides gIving the boy something to occupy his attention and increase his mental capacity vou will be getting a good set for less than it gvould cost to buy one ready made, CLAIMS SERVICE MEN FAIL TO AID ECONOMY | Have No Idea of Spending Con- servatively, Says Madden, on Air- Plane Developments. By the Associated Press, BLOOMINGTON, Il Oet — Representative Martin B~ Madacn, chairman of the House appropriations committee, declared in an address here that the designing and con- struction of afrplanes for use by the Army and Navy should be placed in the hands of ‘a civililan group which knows better how to spend money than the regular Army. “Army and naval officers have no 1dea of how to apend money conserva- tively,” he declared. “Col. Mitchell, a good soldier and a good friend of mine, has no more idea of how to conserve money than a four-year-old chitd.” i01| Federal WASHINGTON, D.
