The next in line in the way of tubes which have very low current con- sumption characteristics are the UV- 199 and C-299 tubes. These are the most economical members of the radio tube family, although their perform- ance on the very low values of cur- rent which they use is really re markable. These tubes can be used as detec- tors, radio frequency amplifiers, audio frequency amplifiers and osciilators. They are very suitable for radio fre- quency amplifiers because of their very low inter-electrode capacity, and they make as good detectors as any of the other tube efficient as the E tubes of the UV-201-A and C-301-A tubes as audio frequency amplifiers, but where just good volume is re. quired, for instance, for us the average home, they are very s able for use throughout in a receiver. Their low current consumption and the fact that they may be operated for a long time on small flashlight bat- teries make them particularly adapt- able for portable sets. The amplification constant of this type of tube is 6.5. The mutual con- ductance s 340 micromhos at 40 volts plate and zero grid potential, and in- creases to 410 micromhos at 90 volts plate and 4.5 volts negative grid po- tential. The required fllament termi- nal voltage is 3 volts, and can be ob- tained by connecting three 13%-volt dry cells in series, using a 30-ohm rheo- stat to bring the value down to the required 3 volts. Filament Current Consumption. The filament current consumption is ‘only 0.06 ampere, making the en ergy consumption only 0.18 watt. The best plate voltage to use as a detector is 40 volts, although 45 volts can be used at slight increase of plate cur rent. The tube is not critical in its filament and plate current require- ments. It can be used with a plate voltage of from 20 to 80 volts, although best results when used as an amplifier will be obtained when the higher voltages are used with a suitable C battery negative bias of from 1 to 4.5. For voltages higher than 80 the negative bias should be increased to about 6 volts. The plate current consumption without use of C batterles varies from 1 milliampere at 20 volts plate to 4 milliamperes at 80 volts. The use of a C battery reduces the plate current drain at voltages higher than 40. The plate energy consumption varies from 0.02 to 0.32 watt. When used as a detector a grid con denser of .00025 mfd. capacity and a &rid leak of from 2 to 5 megohms re- sistance should be used. The tube is very small in size, its over-all dimensions being 1 inch in diameter and 3% inches in length For use in sets where space is at a premium and a low battery current consumption for operation on small dry cells is required, the UV-199 and C-299 tubes are without doubt the most efficient, satisfactory and economical tubes to use. A special tube base is used which requires the use of a spe. cial socket. Tubes Ranked High. ‘The greatest step in the development of vacuum tubes came with the de. velopment of the UV-201-A and C-301-A SICKNESS The nauses of travel stopped st once. These tubes easily stand at the top rung of the radio tube ladder. They are the most efliclent tubes developed for general all-around use as detectors, radio frequency ampli- fiers, audio frequency amplifiers and oscillators. This tube uses the same type of filament used in the UV-199 and C-209, but the tube is larger and operates at higher currents which give greater results than those attain- able with the use of the smaller tubes. The amplification constant of this tube has been increased to 8. The mutual conductance of the tube at a plate voltage of 40 and zero grid potential is 476 micromhos, and at 10 plate voltage and 4 volts negative potential it jumps to the figure of 710 mi- cromhos, a figure that readily indi- cates its capabilities as an amplifier. The required filament voltage of 5 volts is obtained through the use of a 6-volt storage battery. To bring the voltage to the required filament volt- age, a rheostat having a resistance of 4 volts is sufficient, but it will often be found useful to use a rheostat of about 10 ohms, particularly when the tube is used as a detector. The current consumption of the tube is equal to 0.25 ampere, giving an energy consumption of 1.25 watts. At plate voltages of from 40 to 100 volts, the plate current consumption varfes from 1 milllampere at the lower voltage to 6 milliamperes at the higher voltage, with a plate energy consump- tion of from 0.04 to .6 watt. When used as a detector, a grid condenser of .00026 mfd. capacity and a grid leak of 2 to 5 megohms should FRIDAY, JULY 17, be used. The over-all dimensions of the tube are 1% inches in diameter and 4 6-18 Inches In length. This tube uses the standard Navy type base and will fit a standard socket. e Resignation Accepted.
