16 AMUSE (Continued from Fifteenth Page.) or compelling pleture, largely because after years of scenarios of “gold-dig- zer” plots and triangle love affair there is nothing new to the theater- zoing public in this story. True, it has the feature of the father and son who fall in love with the same siren, but despite good’ acting the plcture falls into the commonplace. It is a pastime, but could scarcely be call ed high entertainment. Irene Rich and Huntley Gordon carry the leading roles. Minor features of the Rialto bill,] however, prove big attractions. Hus- ton Ray, planist, won great applause by his spirited playing. It was well won applause, for Mr. Ray plays with delightful technique and feeling, and shows great promise for 8o young an artist. His best number, and the best received by the audience, was his duo-art selection, accompaning an elec tric player piano. Other selections were Strauss’ “Blue Danube” and an elaborate development of that old timer, “Turkey in the Straw.” A charming dance divertissement is performed by Elizabeth Gorman and Ted Gerard, an_interpretation of Vic- tor Herbert's “Kiss in the Dark the Rialto orchestra is led b ductor Mischa Guterson in a rendition of selections from the opera, “La Bo- heme,” by Puccini The story of the feature picture concerns a busy, too busy, middle-aged man, depressed by work, who is caught in the clutches of an unscrupu- lous woman. The father falls for the superficial attractions of the girl im- mediately after he had reprimanded his son for wasting his time and money in pursuing a ‘gold-digger” girl, who chanced to be the same woman. The father, aggravated by ir ritating concomitants of his home life in addition to pressing business worries, turns to the pretty pouting girl for distraction. While he is being entranced at dinner parties away from home, one of his supposed friends—the kind who borrow money—is attempting to win the affection of his wife. The hus. band observes some of his advances, but not the action of the wife in re- pulsing the disloyal friend. The cli max comes when the son attempts to kill his father at the apartment of the vampire, but the wife, who has known of her husband's wanderings, arrives just in time to add to the dra- matic developments. Irene Rich gives a good perform- ance as the wife, but it is not her best work. Huntley Gordon gives his usual studied characterization. John Harron plays the son and Constance Bennett the girl who caused all the family turmoil. John Roche is seen in the small part of the interloping friend. A Hal Chase comedy, “Bad Boy," and news reels of the monkey trial at Dayton complete the bill PALACE—"The White Desert.” “The White Desert,” Reginald Bar- ker's latest picture, at Loew's Palace this week, is timely entertainment. Filmed on top the Continental Divide, it carries the audience from the heat of the city to chilling fields of ice and snow, and there tells a thrilling story of love, adventure and rescue. Claire Windsor, Robert Frazier and Pat O’Malley have the principal roles, the former as the daughter of a rallroad president and the two latter as young construction engineers who become rivals for the girl's favor. The ex- citement starts when the pretty girl makes her appearance at the con- struction camp for a visit, where she at once becomes the center ol inter- est, and particularly so of the young engineers. Both seem equally favored by the girl at first, and it is dificult to tell which will come out the win- ner—if either. But the determined young assistant who risks his life in a two-fisted battle with a burly camp boss on the edge of a precipice and snatches the girl from the brink of death finally becomes the favored one. Beautiful as well as thrilling scenes are woven into the storv, some taken at an elevation of 11,500 feet in the teeth of a raging blizzard, and includ- Ing a vast plunging avalanche that sweeps everything before it. The pic- ture was adapted from a story by Courtney Riley Cooper. news reels, Topics of the Day and a pleasing overture number and musical score by the Palace Orchestra are added attractions. EARLE ROOF—"Heart of a Siren.” Barbara La Marr, one of the favor- ites of screen vamps, has a role in she appears to exceptional ad- vantage in “Heart of a Siren,” the feature of the Earle Roof program yesterday and through tomorrow night. It is one of those stories of a woman who has trodden ruthlessly on masculine hearts until at last she feels the call of love herself. Conway Tearle fills the role of conquerer of the siren satisfactorily. Added to the interest of the film is the pleasure of the cool night air on the roof. TIVOLI—"T'l Bhow You the Town.” Reginald Denny at Crandall's Tivoll Theater yesterday and today appears in one of the most amusing light comedies of the season, Universal's “I'll Show You the Town,” in which a young college professor in his en- deavor to salvage his institution of learning from financl disaster amasses a volume of scandal that {s almost unbelfevable. Mack Sennett’s two-reeler featuring Ralph Graves in “Breaking the Ice"; the Pathe Review and pipe organ music by Otto F. Beck complete the bill Tomorrow and Wednesday, Blanche d | reel comedy dramas of college life, Sweet and Ronald Colman will be seen in “His Supreme Moment.” AMBASSADOR—"Soul Fire.” “For the Love of a Gal” Paul Terry’s latest black and white screen fun ‘in the Aesop Fable series at Crandall's Ambassador Theater the first three days of this week, with the farmer, mice, cats and other partici- pants in Mr. Terry's clever philoso- phies, and pipe organ music, with other short reels supplement John S. Robertson's screen version of Martin Brown's play, “Great Music,” present- ul Fire,” with ss in the stellar role, which is reviewed elsewhere in this column. CENTRAL—"Tainted Money.” A stirring drama of the big timber country, in which a girl brings about peace between two warring factions led, respectively, by father and his son, is shown at Crandall's Central Theater through today under the title of “Tainted Money,” with Eva Novak and William Fairbanks in leading roles, together with the ninth release in H. C. Witwer's new series of two- “Merry Kiddo,” with George O'Hara and Alberta Vaughn, supported by Kit Guard and Al Cooke, and a new juvenile comedy, “Baby Blue,’ the program being rounded out by pipe organ music. “Tainted Money” {s an action pic- turesque from start to finish, with modest little diversions such as blow: ing up miles of road, battles to the death in cabins mined with dynamite and other cheerful little things. Mrs. Virginia D. Whorton, until her death in Birmingham, Ala., the other day at the age of 101, had received a letter from her son in Dallas, Tex. every day for 30 years. ol RAMSAY WATCH SHoP K25~F-ST. “STOP ITCHING ECZEMA | Penetrating, Antiseptic Zemo Will Help You Never mind how often you have tried and failed, you can stop burn- ing, itching Eczema quickly by ap- plying Zemo.
