By the Assoclated Prees. PROVIDENCE, R. I, June 24-—The first case growing out of investigation of Rhode Island divorce mills for non- residents has resulted in conviction. Leonard W. Horton, master in chan- cery, and his law partner, Francis P. Dougherty, were found guilty vester- day by a jury of conspiring to defeat justice by procuring a decree of di- vorce through a fraudulent deposition. The indictment, one of 26 in which the two men were named either singly or jointly, was based on the divo decree obtained last March by Mrs. Genevleve I*. Thomas of New York from Edwin T. Thomas. Attorney General Charles P. Sisson has declared that there have béen collusion and alse depositions in about 100 divorce es in which non-residents set forth that they lived in Rhode Island Divorce Trials Secret. Emanuel George Rands of Provi- dence, signer of a deposition in the Thomas case, testified that he had signed the paper at the request of Dougherty without knowledge of its contents. A police inspector and a de tective testified that street addresses and other depositions admitted in evi dence were false. Divorce evidence fs heard in secret in Rhode Island, and usually consists of depositions without the appearance of witnesses or tha partles involved. The grounds are broad. The sentencing of Horton and Dougherty has been delayed becauss of their intention to appeal. The maxi- mum penalty is 10 vears' imprison- ment. Quick, safe, sure relief. Prevent ahoe pressure.
