SEOPES IS SEKING FORMER POSTON Makes Application for Job as Teacher in High School Again. By the Associated Press. DAYTON, Tenn., June 17.—John T. Scopes, who has termed himself the “goat” in the coming struggle over the Tennessee anti-evolution law, prob- ably will occupy the spotlight for some time to come, but this appar- ently has not detracted from his 4 sire to refill his old position as a teacher in the Rhea County High School next term. The indicted science teacher, whose action in explaining the theory of evo. lution to his has created world- interest, has made formal - plication to the school board for the position, it was announced. Walter White, superintendent of schools and chief prosecutor in the case, appeared surprised at the application, but de- clined to comment. Among outstanding developments in the cas sterday was the statement by Gov. Austin Peay that he would not go to Dayton to testify ‘“unless required to by compulsory process." An invitation to the governor to ap- pear as a witness for the prosecution was extended by Mr. White. Edison had offered his services as a witness for the defense were denied by Mr, Edi- son, who asserted he-had ne intention of attending the trial. Rumors that Willlam Jennings Brvan had obtained the services of Samuel Untermyer, prominent New York attorney, to aid in the prosecution, were scoffed at by Dr. George W. Rapplevea, original prosecutor of Scopes, who returned to Dayton from conferences in New York. One addition to the list of those who will defend Scopes was added with the announcement at New York that the American Civil Liberties fon had accepted the services of Charles H. Strong, secretary of the Bar Association of New York City, and had appointed Mr. Strong, who is president of the body, its observer at the trial. Following similar action taken by other county schools boards in Ten- nessee, the De Kalb County board an- nounced that it would sign no contract with any teacher until first obtainirg the applicant’s views in evolution.
