26 * WALL STREET LIST EAVY AT FINISH Higher Call Money One Cause of Late Stock Seliing for Both Accounts. BY STUART P. WEST. 8pecial Dispaich to The Star. NEW YORK, June 1,—Both rails and industrials were again in de- mand on the Stock Exchange today, while a score or more new high rec- ords for the year were made, includ- ing a number of stocks of the spe- cialty class. The movement in the public utilities was extended, al- though profit-taking sales in this quarter were noticeable. Wall Street interpreted the latest developments in the Greater New York traction fleld as being unfavor- able to the 5-cent fare cause. Inter- borough Rapid Transit went up near- ly 8 points. Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit common made a new high, up over 2 points, and Third Avenue gained over a point. Many New High Marks. New high levels were reached in many directions. The Reading issues, first and second preferred and com- mon; Woolworth, Americgn Tobacco B, California Packing, International Paper, Hoffman Machinery, Phila- delphia Co. 6 per cent preferred, Kelly Springfleld 6 per cent, Palge- Detroit, International Shoe, Brown Shoe, Virginia Power, Great Western Sugar, Shattuck and International Telephone and Telegraph were among those which overtopped their former highs for 1925. Great Western Sugar was bought on the attractiveness of its yleld as an 8 per cent stock selling just above par. International Tele- bhone and Telegraph above 117 was up over 6 points on the day and over 25 points from where it was selling a week ago. The probabilitles were that the final spurt in this stock represented the run-n of a venture- some short interest. Steel Stocks Heavy. Steel stocks were distinctly heav and so were most of the equipments. Motor shares sold off under the lead of Willys-Oakland issues, which finally became quite weak. The reduction in prices of certain rs by the Willys- Overland and of the Essex, announced this morning, probably had something to do with the selling. Heavy profit taking came into American Smelting and the rise in the coppers was checked Selling was resumed in Internation- al Mercantile Marine issues and in American Woolens—two points of Weakness which_have been cropping out periodically for some time past— indicating that the conditions In Inter- national Mercantile Marine were not general, as provided by a sharp rise of betwee: and 3 points in Atlantic, Guif and West Indies. Shares of rubber and tire companies were responding to the recent increase in tire price: Uoodrich rose 1% points. United States Rubber was up more than a point. B. & 0. Actively Bought. Among the rails Reading got above h 90, and more and Ohio for a tme w actively bought above 8v. AMissouri Pacific preferred rose more than a point General Electric had an early ‘ump of 5 pofnt quently did not do mut ratic Maxwell Mo tors 1 were bid up 5 points, but they, too, were less active in the lu trading. United States Distributing preferred changed hanus 10 level 2 point points above its previous price nd the common rose more than Southern Railway Bought. The Street was talking about a decision to be handed down this week on the Southern Rail preferred stockholders’ suit. Principal holders of the common were reported as con- fident that the decision would be tavorable to their interests, and the common was selling at 96 or better much of the time. The suit involves a claim of $29,000,000 on account of alleged preferred dividend arrears. Two things influenced the buying in Montgomery Ward. One was the opinion that in comparison with other mail order shares it had been selling 100 low, and the other was the very good earnings situation revealed in a serfes of favorable monthly state- ments. It was expected that the May report would disciose an increase of over ¥ per cent in sales. Sears Roe- buck also worked higher, and the other members of the chain and de- partment store group were selling around their best prices. MARKET CLOSES HEAVY. Extra Selling Pressure Exerted on Rails and Oil Shares. NEW YORK, June 1 (®) —Stock prices turned reactionary in toda market, with selling for both ac- counts inspired by the marking up of call money rates and the disclos- ures of a weakened technical posi- ton in several pivotal industrials, which dropped 2 to 4 points. Pool op- erations, however, were successfuily conducted in more than a score of issues, particularly among the public utilities. Total sales approximated 1,400,000 shares. The closing was heavy. Selling pressure became more pronounced in the afternoon trading, particularly the rails and oil shares, but inde- pendent strength was shown by Max- well Motors A and American Water- works, which touched record highs at 120 and 67, respectively. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK.—Stocks heavy; Amer- ican Waterworks at record high. Bonds steady; local traction issues rally. Foreign exchanges irregular; sterling steady; lira declines. TRACTION ISSUES MARKET LEADERS New York Bonds Active in Early Trading—Rails Are Listless. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Sta: NEW YORK, June 1.—Local trac- tions were the feature of the bond market today. Quotations for all the Interborough obligations ran up a point and a half to two points with- out interruption. Brooklyn Manhat- tan Transit 6s at 90 made a new % | high record for all timex Third Ave- nue adjustments crossed 40 for the first time in over a week and more than 3 points above last week's low price. Third Avenue refunding 4s went along with the income bonds. New York Railways 6s were firm around Saturday’s closing prices. All this buying was based on what Wall Street regarded as an improved po- litical outlook. Gains in Rallroad Liens. In the raflway list the leader was 8t. Louls-S8an Francisco income 6s at new high for two years. The same road’s adjustment 6s and prior lien “A” 48 were strong, but did not ad- vance as did the income bonds. Mis- sourl Pacific bonds were also in de- mand, but Seaboard Air Line issues were in supply around their recent highs. The same was true of Chicago, Terra Haute and Southeastern re- funding §s and income bonds. Peoria and Eastern incomes were fractionally higher. 1In general heavier trading in speculative raflroad issues lagged. Forelgn List Active. Activity in foreign bonds appeared chiefly in German 7s, which were very strong above 96; in the Norway issues, and Argentine 6s. Dealings in Norway bonds were stimulated by the new offering made today of $30,000,000 in Kingdom of Norway 538 on a 6.70 per cent basis. Pro- ceeds of this new issue are to be used in part to retire Norway 8s at 110 on October 1 next. The 8s sold at 111 today. All three 6 per cent Norway issues sold around 101, to yield only a littie more than the new 5% per cent bonds. Argentine 6s changed hands in large blocks at 96, which is the price at which the new $45,000,000 Argentine loan, also carrying a 6 per cent coupon, is to be offered for subsrip. tion tomorrow. Today’s New Offerings. The weak spot today, as it was last week, was International Mercan tile Marine 6s. The quotation made a new low for the year. New _offerings included $6,300,000 Great Western Power 5i4s, to yield 5.57 per cent; $8,000,000 Detroit bdi son Refunding bs, to yleld more than 5 per cent, and §$1,000,000 Atlantic Joint Stock Land Bank (Raleigh N. C) 55, to vield 4.56 per cent optional maturity. 0 TREASURY CERTIFICATES. (Quotations furnished by Redmond & Co 55552e0! 8]22382 Se85ses: 3822888 DAIRY PRODUCTS.
