16 1.5 GROUP SEEKS BELGRADE TROLLEY Offers to Invest $3,000,000 in Rebuilding Lines in City. BY JUNIUS B. WOOD. Wy Cable to The Star and Chicage Daily News. BELGRADE, May 25.—American interests are prepared to invest £7.000,000 or $8,000,000 with the local | zovernment for an electric light and power concession. Charles B. Mac- | Daniel of Atlanta, Ga., backed by Elisha Walker, Willlam Chadbourne and other New York capitalists, has offered to rebuild the antiquated trol- ley system by expending $3,000,000, provided he receives a 30-year lease. He guarantees the city $100,000 an- nually, or 10 per cent on the first investment. Mr. MacDaniel, Serbla with the Hoover mission, is already operating similar concessions in other Jugoslav cities. A novel fea- ture of the American proposal is the inclusion of an offer to pave the roadways and bulld sidewalks in the principal streets of the capital. Mr. MacDaniel offers to expend $4,000,000 ©on these improvements on the receipt of 20.year 8 per cent bonds issued at 84. who first came to Hindenburg Garbed As Marshal, Hailed By Crowd at Races By the Associated Press. The trac- tion system consists of §0 cars and 20 miles of tracks. When the lights in the residences are burning on Winter evenings the current is reduced to such an extent that only 15 cars can he operated during the rush hour. The others are taken off and the people walk. The fare runs from 1 to 5 cents, according to the distance. The cars are always overcrowded. Before the city took over the trac- tion system the Beigian company, which operated it, built and operated trolley lines in Antwerp out of its profits in Belgrade. The streets of this city are hilly and with the ex- ception of the main thoroughfares are paved with rough stones. They are bably the worst in any civilized ity in the world. The only difference between the sidewalks and the road- ways is that the stones in the latter are smaller and rougher and the holes more numerous. The ankles and shoe leather of the citizens consequently suffer heavily. It is understood that the American interests propose a private investmeht without floating bonds.
