28 * REALEING SALES SLOW UP STOGKS Copper Shares Gain—0ils Are Confused—Rail Issues Show Less Strength. BY STUART P. WEST. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 14.—As has been the case for the last week or more, the market today displayed great irregu larity in the movements of individual stocks. Copper shares were strong for a time, and so were some of the oils and one or two of the rails. But in the afternoon realizing sales were heavy enough in the greater part of the list to bring about some reaction. The re-establishment of Marland Oil on a dividend basis at the annual rate of $3 had evidently been discounted The stock soid off in the later trad- ing. Pacific Oil was strong for a while, getting well up to 60, and there was talk of a dividend increase. But it, too, slipped off with the rest of the market. Independent Oil and Gas was bought on favorable earnings reports. Kven at the present level of oil prices it was estimated that net profits were running at the rate of $8 a share Rail Merger Gossip. For vears a merger of Wheeling and Lake Erie with other properties has been discussed. The only difference between the new rumors.dnd the old is that they associate the road with a different set. The talk accompanying the rise in the preferred shares today 10 31 and in the common well above 16 was that powerful financial inter- ests were buying into these stocks and that Wheeling would wind up in a new system along with Delaware and Hud son, Buffalo, Rochester and Pitts burgh, and the proposed new Harri- man line across Pennsylvania Copper Shares Strong. The rise in the coppers, which car- ried Kennecott across 50 and brought about gains of a half point to a point in Anaconda, Cerro de Pasco and the others, was inspired by the publica- tien of the April figures on copper production showing a considerable falling off as compared with March. American Smelting rose nearly 2 points, and Butte and Superior at one stage was up over 113 points. Ray Consolidated was helped by the state- ment for the first quarter, which showed a net of $1,198,388, against £343.619 last year. This, however, in- ludes the income from Chino, which did not figure in the Ray statement of the first three months of 1924. Mercantile Marine. A poor report for 1924 is expected to be published within 10 days by the International Mercantile Marine Co.. according to current Wall Street gos- sip. After allowing for depreciation, it is understood that interest charges for the 12 months were not fully cov- ered. In 1923 Mercantile Marine re- ported a deficit of $2.551,728, and the profit and loss surplus at that time hed been reduced to $24.426,721. The rise in California Packing was based upon the report that at the next directors’ meeting a_stock divi- dende would be voted. This notion was discredited in some quarters even while the stock today was reaching new high prices. The com- pany’s recent earnings statement, however, showed a good sized margin over dividend requirements. CLOSE IS IRREGULAR. Selling Orders Predominate in Last Hour Sales. NEW YORK, May 14 (A.P..—Pro- fessional operators encountered stiffer resistance in their campaign for higher prices in today’s stock market, which was subjected to selling of standard shares in which large profits had accumulated. Pool operations were successfully extended into new fields, notably the copper and food i Sales approximated 1,250,000 shares. The closing was irregular. Selected stocks, including Du_Pont, United States Cast Iron Pipe, Universal Pipe, Stromberg Carburetor and Ginter, were bid up 3 points in the final hour, but selling orders predominated elsewhere. particularly in the railroad list. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispateh to The Star. ‘ NEW YORK, May 14.—Foreign bonds were the leaders in today’'s mar- ket, especlally the French, where the buying was stimulated by reports of an approaching settlement of the French war debt to the United States. The 7%s crossed 99 as against their of 93 in April. ench rallway issues -were strong, Paris, Lyons and Mediterranean issues gaining about a point. Other Issues Strong. The better feeling extended to other foreign issues, including the Austrian 78, which at 98 were at a new high for the year, Czechoslovak 8s, both maturities of ‘which sold again at par, and Jugoslav 8s, which were frac: tionally higher, and the German Ts, which were firm around 95. A speclal case was the new high record in_Copenhagen 5%s. On July 1 next, $750,000 par value of these Copenhagen bonds are to be called for redemption at 100 by lot. Today's tuying was evidently in anticipation of this drawing. In the South American group the feature was the rush of buying of Brazil 8s, carrying the price to a new top for this year. New Records in U. S. Bonds. New high records were made again in the U. S. Government bond list. The issues which sold above their previous best price for the year were the first 413 Libertys and the fourth 4%s. There was little change in the high-grade rails, but among those of second grade there was heavy buying of B. & O. issues, especially the re- funding 6s of 1995 and the refunding 5s secured under the same mortgage. New tops for both were recorded. Sugar bonds were generally higher, eastern Cuba Sugar 7%3s _advancing a full point. American Beet Sugar convertible 6s were listed on the ex- change and traded in for the first time with a fractional advance. The attraction here ‘is the conversion privilege into common stock at 50 Copper bonds went up with copper stocks, Chile Copper 6s and Magma Copper 7s belng most prominent Today's New Offerings. New offerings included $ Western Public Service first mortgag 6s to yield 6.15 per cent, and $1,000.000 Pacific Coast Joint Stock Land Bank 5s to vield 4.50 per cent to the re { deemable date. =Sl oo COTTON PACT REACHED. CHICAGO, May 14.—Wheat prices ‘went straight upward today as soon as the market opened. Unexpected firmness of quotations at Liverpool, together with improved export de- mand here and surprising smallness of shipments from Argentina, were largely responsible. There was also talk current that on account of low temperature an unusually big percent- age of seeded wheat in Saskatchewan has failed to germinate. The opening, % to 2 higher—May 1.62% and July 1.49% to 1.50%—was followed by an ascent to 1.63%; for May and 1.51% for July. Cold weather complaints gave in dependent strength to the corn mar- ket. After opening at i to 1% ad- vance—July 1.16% to 1.17%—prices scored a slight additional gain. Oats sympathized with corn and | wheat. Starting at l3a}% to }; ad. vance—July 44% to 45—ocats made some further ascent. Declines in the value of hogs acted as a welght on the provision market. Subsequent further sharp advances in price took place, May touching $1.681;. Export business was sald to be on a large scale, and there were advices that crop damage from Hes- slan fly was affecting a wide area, including sections of Illinois, Kansas and Nebraska. Dry weather North- west was also a stimulating_factor. Wheat closed strong, 2 to 7 cents net higher, May $1.67% to $1.68, and July $1.52 to $1.52%. w. = MaVHEAT— Open July : September .
