LONDON, April 29.—Great Britain's return to the gold standard is hailed with general satisfaction in the ex- change market, where the pound sterling took another step nearer parity this morning and touched $4.84% under strong buying from practically all sources. This figure is close to what is known as “the gold point,” when charges for freight, insurance and so forth are taken into consideration, or $4.8567 for the shipment of gold from London to New York.
