C, M BRIG. GEN. BORDEN EXPIRES AT AGE OF 81 Retired Officer, Union Veteran of Civil War, Will Be Buried in Arlington. Brig. Gen. George Pennington Bor- den, 81 years old, U. S. A., retired, veteran of the Union Army and of the Indian wars that followed the Civil War, died at his home in New York City yesterday, according to word re- ceived here today. Following funeral Michael's Episcopal Church, New York, tomorrow, the body will be brought to Washington for interment in Arlington Cemetery. Gen. Borden was in several of the major engagements during the Civil War, having been taken prisoner in the battle of the Wilderness, but was released before the end of the war. Later he served with Gens. Hancock and Miles in Indian wars. Born at Fort Wayne, Ind., Brig. Gen. Borden received his elementary education in the public schools and at Fairfield Academy, New York. In 1862 he enlisted as a private in the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry and served untll during 1863, when he was discharged to accept an appoint- ment to the United States Military Academy, where he remained until the following year. In 1866 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 5th United States Infantry from Indiana. Subsequently he was pro- moted to be first lieutenant and reached the grade of captaln in 1891. Eight years later he was pro- moted to the rank of major and at- tained the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1902, reaching the grade of colonel in the 24th United States Infantry in 1905. He was retired in 1907 at his own request and given the rank of brigadier general. He was a member of the Loyal Le- gion, the Society of the Army of the Potomac, the Society of Indian Wars and of the Army and Navy Club of New York. services in St. Week End Liquor Record.
