By the Amsociated Preas CHICAGO, April 25.—Although widespread rain giving relief from drought have eased prices down for wheat from the coming harvest, the market for May delivery of wheat has worked higher this week. Scarc- ty of May offerings was an out- tanding feature at times. and the alue of wheat already on hand was strengthened by Russian famine orts and by a reduction nf more han 40.000.000 bushels in the esti- ted wheat vield of India. Com ed with a week ago. wheat this \orning, and corn as well, ranged rom 15 -cent decline to 114 -cent ad- 1nce, with oats !5 to * and & ent up and provisions cents to 1.10 down I 87 Interest in New Crops. Interest of spec ve traders in vheat shifted more and more to the ew crop months, July and Septem- ser, whereas dealings in the May de- ive nsisted to a greater extent i the evening up of accounts lealers unprepared to furnish actual wheat in settlement of contracts Despite frequent reports that wheat from Duluth was being diverted to Chicago. skepticism as to any great iflux of old wheat here was general and especially so after dis sure that March exports from the United States were 16,202,000 bushels more than had been figured out by unoffi- cial authoritles. Rain Saves Wheat Belt. owing wheat in Kansas, Okla- homa and north Texas was credited with having received the most help from the rains. The Spring wheat belt Northwest appeared also to have been given particular benefit, with an outlook that seeding would be complete about two weeks earlier than usual. Curtailment of the Argentine corn crop continued to strengthen the prices of future deliveries of corn, but cash demand was slack. Loss of 2,000,000 bushels of oats by fire here affected the oats market Sharp setbacks in hog values weakened the provision market. April 25—Wheat took an early swing downward in price to- day, largely as a result of further rains helpful to growth of the Winter erop. A decline in quotations at Liverpool tended also to bring about setbacks here, despite announcement of a new high record for sterling ex change. Pit traders were fairly active sellers, with commission houses buy- ing on the downturns. The opening, which ranged from 13 to 2% lower, May 1.50 to 1:51% and July 1.39% to 1.40, was followed by an irregular de- scent to 1.49 May and 1.38%3 July.
