OPTICAL CO. 614 Sth St. Branch store 712 11th Street Deep Channel to Georgetown Harbor Planned by Army Engineers. With the approval of the Secretary ot War, Maj. Gen. Taylor, chief of En- glneers, has allotted $114,500 for the improvement of navigation in the Poto- mac River at Washington during the balance of this year and the whole of the next fiscal year, in accordance with the recommendations of Maj. O'Connor, the Engineer officer in charge. The money will be expended mainly in re- dredging Virginia Channel, in the main- tenance of the levee around Columbia Island, ip the operation and maintenance of the tidal gates in the Tidal Basin and for the repair of Government plants and property. The proposed operations contemplate a sufficient depth and width of the channel to enable the free pas- sage of deep-draught vessels to Georgetown and Washington Harbors. May Get More Later. Other allotments are river improvements at Alexandria, $1.800; at Occoquan Creek, Va., $2,700; at Aquia Creek, Va. $7,500; at Rap- pahanock River, Va, $8,800; at Mat- taponl River, Va., $3,500; at Appa- mattox River, Va. $10,000; Pagan River, Va, $2,000, and Blackwater River, Va, $3,000. All these allot- ments’ are made from appropriations by the last Congress. Gen. Taylor says that the amounts now allotted are regarded as the minimum amounts necessary for im- mediate use on the various projects. In some cases they are less than those recommended by the district officer, but are now regarded as suf- ficlent to care for immediate needs If it develops later, he says, that they are insufficient such additional amounts s may be necessary will be allotted. made for The Real Reason PERHAPS the real reason our cus- tomers get so much satisfaction out of wearing Tolmanized starched collars is because we get so much satisfac- tion from laun- dering a bundle of collars better than they have ever been laun- dered before.
