e b FINANCIAL. STOCKS IN RALLY INBRIEF SESSION Less Urgent Selling Noted in i Market Today—Heavy Short Covering. Ty the Associated Press. EW YORK, March 14—Rallying tendencies developed in today's brief session of the stock market after an carly perlod of heaviness which ap- parently was due to the elimination of weak speculative accounts. Commission houses reported that the recent drastic decline in wheat yrices and the approach of tax day 1:2:d brought about the urgent selling of stocks, which appeared to have run §i5 course this morning. The demand for equipments was rtimulated by the announcement that tho railroads had placed orders aggre- Fating $9,000,000 during the week, a #pecial reason for the strength of Union Tank Car being the large cash Loldings shown in the annual balance Eheet. St Joseph Lead advanced 3 points to a record top, and American Can, General Electric and Mack Truck all showed substantial gains on the day. The closing was firm. Total sales approximated 500,000 shares. EQUIPMENTS STRONGEST. Oils Very Weak—st. Paul Issues in New Collapse. Eneeial Dispateh to The Star. YORK, March 14.—The mar- as unsettled for @ time again | , still feeling the effec f the | ymmotion produced by Friday's col- | Japse in wheat. There was, however, big interest which began to func- n after prices had dropped off in | ho first half hour. Short covering ought about a moderate rally in the later trading. ¥quipment stocks gave about the Dest account of themselves of any Eroup—American Locomotive, Amer- jcan Car and Foundry and Baldwin. Bathlehem Steel sold at a new low of 43. Steel common sold most of the time slightly under 123. Oils Especlally Weak. The oils were conspicuously weak in the early trading. Pool support in Independent Oil and Gas was relaxed nd the stock broke from 31 to under Pacific Oil, California Petroleum and other recent favorites also de- clined. It was noticeable that the oils were rather reluctant to join in the rally in the final hour. Allis Chalmers was very strong and Laclede Gas took another jump. American Woolens dropped below 43, but subsequently responded to short co¥ering. St. Pauls Again Tumble. At the close the fresh collapse in the St. Paul lssues was the feature. On very large blocks St. Paul pre- ferred broke to a new low of 15. The common was equally heavily sold. Reports of tentative plans for pro- tective committees to look after the interest of bondholders were directly responsible for the selling. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 14—The feature of the bond market at the close of the week was the demand for the high- grade railroad issues coming within the “legal for savings bank” class. Prices did not advance, but the steadi- ness of these lssues in the face of the weakness in the more speculative descriptions was very impressive tes- timony as to the abundant supply of investment capital. Atchison General 4s, the typlcal bonds of this kind sold within a frac- tion of Its high of the vear, and Chi- cago, Burlington and Quincy-Illinois Division 4s, Southern Pacific refund- ing 4s, Atlantic Coast Line first 4s and New York Central 0s, were all very firm. In the foreign group the leader was again the Jugoslav 8s, which made another new high, this time above 9. There was no sympathetic re- sponse in other foreign bonds. Hungarian 7%s and Czechoslovak 8s both sagged. In the South Ameri- can division the Argentines were fairly firm, but Peruvian 85 were tractionally lower. Speculative bonds, both raflroads and industrials, were affected by the weakness in stocks. The St. Paul 4s of 1925 were again heavily sold Among the sugars Warner Sugar 7T were especially we dropping a point and a half on a single string of transactions. WHEAT PRICES CUT 40 CENTS A BUSHEL Yesterday’s Crash in Chi- cago Greatest Ever Known in Single Day. By the Associated Pre CHICAGO, March 14.—Wheat has fallen nearly 40 cents a bushel in a little more than a couple of weeks, suffering the worst In the last three days. Sudden curtallment of Euro- pean buying in the Urited Staes, to- gether with an abrupt stop to a scare over threatened damage to the do- mestic Winter crop, has been largely responsible for the most sensational breaks in pric Compared with a week ago, wheat this morning showed 9% cents to 14% cents loss, with 7l2 cents to 9% cents off; oat: cents to 8 cents down, and provisions varying from 50 cents decline to 45 cents advan, Chief. Factors in Tumble. From $1.89% for May delivery, a height reached on Tuesday of this week, the wheat market underwent a series of violent setbacks, culmi- natigg yesterday In a collapse to $1.66%. The rise to $1.89% had fol- lowed the issuance of a Government report disclosing notable scarcity of wheat in country mills and elevators and confirming the lowest private es- timates of the amount of wheat in reserve on farms. At this juncture the attention of traders became fo- ed on reports of huge arrivals of at at Liverpool and on indications ruch larger crops in foreign coun- tries Worst Break Ever Known. Then ne widespread rains, put- ting an end to fears of damage by drought over great stretches of the West and ter wheat. Selling out of wheat hold- ings assumed extraordinary propor- tlons, and the smash in grain values which followed was referred to by, some authorities as probably the most complete ever seen in any one day. Corn, oats and rye were uepressed chiefly by the action of wheat Heavy stocks of lard made pro- visions average lower. Advances were confined to meats. TODAY'S GRAIN PRICES. CHICAGO, March 14—Grain mar- kets today surpassed yesterday's rec- ord for rapidity of price changes, if not for the extent of the fluctuations. Weakness was succeeded by strength, and vice versa, with lightning speed At first the wheat market shot down- ward to 5 cents under yesterda finish, but later rallied 6 cents. Un- as to whether liquidating sales by holders were yvet fairly complete, and also bewilderment as to whether export business had re- vived accounted for much of the ir- regularity of values. Trade was of great volume. The opening, which ranged from 7 decline to 1 advance, May 1.66 to 1.681; and July 1.48% to 1.49, was followed by a sharp set- back and then by an cven sharper upturn. Corn and oats reflected the action After opening a 1 to 3% advance, May to 1.21%, the corn market dropped to 1.18%; May, %. Oats start- ed unchanged to 1 hig May, 4; later the market touched 45%. for May. Provislons averaged lower, enced by weakness in values WHEAT— Open. High influ- Low.
