Dr. Abram Simon will break ground for the new $400,000 Jewish Com- munity Center, which Is to be erected at Sixteenth and Q streets, tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock. The affair will take place in the presence of the board of trustees of the institution and will also be blessed by Dr. Simon according to the anaient Hebrew rites. 1t is planned that the structure will serve as a national community center. award, will contain an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,200, a large gymnaslum, a swimming pool, moeting rooms, classrooms, coffee shop. a roof garden and space for offices. Fund Oversubscribed. In the campakgn to raise funds for the center, the quota of $200,000 was oversubscribed by $37,000. The Na- tional Jewlsh Welfare Board, which also conducted a campaign, pledged $50,000. Action by the Senate interstate commerce committee on the nomina- tions of Willlam E. Humphrey of Washington to be a member of the Federal Trade Commission and of Thomas F. Woodlock of New York to be a member of the Interstate Com- merce Commission was postponed to- day until Wednesday. It is planned to have Mr. Hum- phrey appear before the committee then. He testified before a subcom- mittee Saturday. Chalrman_ Smith, Democrat, South Carolina of the committee announced today he would carry his fight for tloning the ability or character of Mr. Woodlock, Senator Smith said his selection was “monstrous” be- cause it gave to New York another representative on the commission and left the South without a member.
