March contracts s0ld off to 23.60 and May to 2 after the call, making net Ueclines of about 12 to 13 points, but offerings tapered off at these figures, followed by rallies of 4 or 5 points on co ing. with the early market fairly steady. Reports of damages by floods in the Eastern belt probably had a sustain- ing influence, but buving seemed to find its chiéf encouragement in the steadiness of Liverpool and faverable Manchester trade advices. HUGHES. PREFERRED STOCKS. While bonds as a class are belie investments than stocks, there ais some preferred issues which are muc | more conservative than some bonds A bond of one corporation is safe [ than the preferred stock of the same company. but that is not to say it ie better than the preferred ue o some other enterprise. In considering preferred stock thera are a number of teéchnical pre visiong which should be carefully ex amined. The first is that of par value Nearly all preferred stocks have xed par value, although of late ther have been a fi without par value | 1¢ the stock has a par value the div dend is expressed In per cent. A per cent preferrd stock of $100 pa pays $7 & vear. A 7 per cent pre terred stock of $50 par pays $2.50 « year. When no par value is assigned the dividend is expressed in dollars so that you have, for instance, a pre red stock of no par paying $7 c 0 or some other sum stated in the certificate. The next point is Whether the stoc is cumuiative or non-dumulative. I the dividend is not paid (the techn: | eal term is “passed”) for any period | When due it must be paid up at some ;lfllvr time in the case of a cumulativ stock. It often happens that large sums accumulate in the way of ur paid dividends on this kind of pre ferred stocks. All such accumula tions have to be taken care of beforr { the common stockholders receive an return on their investment. This pre vision does not apply when the stock | is non-cumulative. In that case | | the company does not earn or does | not pay its dividend in any one year it is under no obligation to make it {up when -times become prosperot again. All that is certain is that If the preferred dividend is not paid in | uny one vear the common stockhold- ers will not recelve anything either Evidently a cumulative preferred i stock is safer than a on-cumulative There are, however, some non-cumu- lative preferred stocks which are highly rated because so far as any one caR seé there is no probability of the corporation being forced to sus- | pend payments even for one quarter.
