NEW YORK, November 17.—Re- port that the long-expected French loan would be offered by the end of this week was the most Interesting development in today's bond market, While no official information was obtainable it was understood that the amount would be $100,000,000, the coupon rate 7 per cent and the price to the investor such as to yleld 7% per cent. Quotations In the forelgn group today were generally steady. The German 7s hardly varled more than an eighth of a point from 95. United Kingdom 5%s of 1937 were strong above 106. Chinese Rallway 5s were up a half point at 44. United States Government loans wore lower, the Treasury 4% losing more than the Liberties. Railrond Bonds Active. Most of the interest in domestic se- curlties, however, was centered in speculative bonds, both rallroads and industrials. New York Central de- benture 6s were the most active and the strongest of the rails. They sold above 112 at a new high record and more than 2 points above the callable price. Heayy buving orders came into the St. Paul list, causing an ad- vance of more than 2 points in the 4s of 1925 and smaller gains in the long- er term bonds. New Haven Issues were all strong again. Seaboard Air Line adjustments gained a halt point. Baltimore and Ohio-Toledo, Cincin- nati 4s sold within a fraction of their record high for the year. In the tractions the feature was the break In Manhattan Rallways sec- ond 4s. These bonds closed at 54 Saturday and opened at 53% this mbrning, selling down 2 points with- out a rally. Maxwell Motors debenture 7s sold above 106 for the first time. In the oil group Sinclair bonds were heavy following the announcement of a new offering of $15,000,000 three-year bs at 981z, Virginia Carolina Chemical s got up to 68, a new high on this recovery. Today's new offerings included $3,500,000 Dallas (Tex.) joint stock land bank 68, redeemabls in 1933 and maturing in 1963, to yield 4.6 per cent to the optional date. Prices Rather Irregular. By the Associated Press NEW YORK, November 17.—Rail- road bonds continued to work into higher ground under the leadership of the New Haven issues in today's early trading, but price movements in other sections of the list were irregular. New 1924 highs were established by three of the New Haven liens—the 7s, converti- ble 6s and franc 7s, and by the New York Central €s, which sold at 1121. St. Paul, Katy and Towa Central obliga- tions ‘moved - fractionally higher. Strength of motor and motor accessory shares promoted buying of these com- panies’ bonds, Maxwell Motors 7s and Fisk Rubber 8s mounting to new 1924 top prices. Selling preesure against United States Government bonds was increased, the Treasury 4%s falling back 1- TAKES CARGO OF SILVER. Speclal Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Novémber 17.—When the steamship Antiocha weighed an- chor and sailed for Hamburg, Ger- many, Saturday, it carrfed the most valuable cargo that has lef: this port for many months. In the hold of the Antiocha was about $550,000. worth of silver bullion that will be closely |guarded until it is unloaded at the German port. It is believed that the metal is to be converted into money for the Ger- man republic, but officers of the boat and her agents were unwilling to di- vulge the purpose for which it will be used. Neither would they say where it had come from. Strict secrecy marked the loading of the valuable cargo. A detail of police kept all persons from the pier while the 478 bars of metal were being hoisted aboard the ship. NEW YORK, November 17.—The cotton market opened steady today at an advance of 6 to 15 points, active months selling 14 to 15 points net higher in the first few minutes on buying promoted by steady cables, reports of frost in the northern part of the belt and expectations that the colder weather would stimulate de- mand for cotton goods. January sold up to 24.95 and March to 25.25. There was considerable hedging, however, while the buying was less actlve than last week and prices eased off several points in the early trading under realizing. Private cables reported hedge sell- ing in Liverpool at the opening fol- lowed by rallies on spinners callings. New Orleans Market. NEW ORLEANS, November 17.—The cotton market had a very steady opening on the execution of fair buy- ing orders accumulated over Sunday. Liverpool came in better than due and first trades here showed gains of 2 to 6 points. CHICAGO, November 17.—Reports of frost in Argentina, together with higher quotation at Buenos Aires and Liverpool, sent wheat prices here up- ward today during the early dealin On the advance, however, some re- cent heavy buyers turned to the sell ing side. “The volume of transactions was fairly large and sentiment rather more evenly divided than has been the rule of late. Opening prices, which ranged from half to 1% high- er, December 1.54% to 1.35% and May 1.62 to 1.62%, were followed by slight further gains and then a moderate temporary sag. Corn and oats were responsive to wheat strength and to Wintry weather. After opening at % to 1% up, May 1.18% +to 1.18%, the corn market receded somewhat, but soon rallied again.
