By the Associated Press. 7" MADRID, September 30.—It is offi- clally reported that the Spanish .-, troops today succeeded in entering |, Xauen (Sheshaun), which ‘the Moor- ish tribesmen have been besieging for some time. Coincident with the relief of the Holy City of Xauen, which lies about 75 miles northwest of Fez, the an- nouncement was made by Gen. | Valle Espinosa, a member of the mil- itary directorate, that while the re- capture might be considered a happy event, a terrific battle was in progress on the Larache (El Araish) sector. Gen. Espinosa added that heavy cas- ualties were being suffered by both sides. Spanish Evacuate Positions. TETUAN, Morocco, September 30.— Several Spanish positions in the Beni-Aros sector, which had been hard pressed by the enemy tribesmen, have been evacuated. The most im- portant of these positions was Sin- grana, dominating Tazarut, the home town of Raisuli, the former bandit. The withdrawal of the Spanish gar- risons was carried out without as- sistance. The Spaniards were about to take away their war material. Enforcement and Observance, which is endeavoring to have the Vol- stead act observed more rigidly. The ‘‘conspiracy,” he added, “has its backing in France, Belgium, Italy and England. “Prominent men in those countries have told me that large sums of money are being sent to the United States to help in the fight against the prohibition act. In various parts of Italy tens of thousands of barrels are being gotten ready to rush to this country by Christmas, when the liquor interests here have said the Volstead act will be repealed.” “A United States Senator,” he con- tinued, “recently called me to Wash- Ington for a conference. He told me that he had discovered a conspiracy— the worst in the history of the coun- try—between wet Democrats and Re- publicans. They were arranging to trade votes, he said, and betray the people.” Mr. Smith said that the way to en- force the Volstead act was to strength- en the consclence of the people by education through the churches. To this end, he said, a large convention will be called in Baltimore and in other cities after the election to carry out educational work. BOY BURIED ALIVE.
