INPOUNDSPAPERS N VETERNS A5 Personal Files of Contractor Held by Court Order—Seek Li Trial Delay. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 17.—The per- Sonal files of John W. Thompson, Chi- cago and St. Louis contractor, de- clared by the government to have an important bearing upon the relations were impounded ye: eral Judge George answer to a petition in behalf of Thompson that the papers be re- turned to the contractor by the Depart- ment of Justice. Judge Carpenter characterized as “indefensible” the method by which he was advised by defense counsel the papers had been secured. In commenting upon the statement of Randolph Laughlin, counsel for Thompson, that the subpoena for the files had been issued from the office of the United States district attorney here without an order of the court, Judge Carpenter declared the prac- tice of subp & evidence for sub- mission to a grand jury before the impaneling of the Jjury would be “stopped in this court.” Seek to Delay ‘The petition was pre: mection with arguments on demur- rers to joint indictments naming Forbes and Thompson for conspiracy to defraud the Government and con 'rial. nted in con- £piracy to commit bribery involving || 2 public official. The papers impounded today in- clude bank statements, personal checks, letters and construction data viewed by the Government as im- portant in establishing evidence of conspiracy. The question as to the admissability in evidence of the im- pounded files, Judge Carpenter ruled, would be left for the trial judge. The defense petition had asked the return of the documents to Thomp- son. GOVERNMENT IS READY. The Department of Justice is ready to proceed with the trial of Charles R. Forbes, former director of the Veterans' Bureau, on indictments charging him with bribery and fraud, according to Attorney General Stone, who announced he had appointed two additional counsel to assist John W. H. Crim, special assistant to the At- torney General, who is in charge of the case. They are Ralph F. Potter of Chicago, who will be a special assistant Attorney General, and As- sistant Attorney General Donovan, who is in charge of the department's criminal prosecutions.
