WALES TO WITNESS OLoNATEATODAY British and American Teams Come Together in Open- ing of Series. By the Associated Press. SYOSSET, N. Y. September 13.— The Prince of s today will sce the British and American polo teams play their first match for the inter- national cup. which was one of the purposes of his visit to this country. The royal box differs from the oth- ers only in the possession of a lino- leum floor covering and wicker chairs instead of wooden folding seats. In front of it are flowers in boxes and a stairway leads directly to the ground. The prince will be recelved at the field by Louis E. Stoddard, president of the United States Polo Association. In his box will sit Gen. Pershing and Sir Esme Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Stod- dard, Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Winthrope, Mr. and Mrs\R. E. Strawbridge, jr., H. G. Chilton, newly appointed min- ister at the British Embassy; Maj. L. D. Metcalfe, equerry; Maj. O. N. Sol- bert, his American aide, and Gen. G. F. Trotter, equerry. Recognized by Crowds. The heir to the British throne yes- terday tested his ability to travel in public in New York incognito. He did not succeed. Riding in a subway, stopping in his motor car to do some shopping in Fifth avenue and leav-| ing the Woolworth Building, after a trip to its pinnacle, he was recog- nized, in the latter two places by crowds so large that he swerved from his intended course to avoid being surrounded as he was at the Belmont Park races on his Labor day visit. In the subway, which in the mid- dle of the afternoon was able to provide a seat for the prince, Capt. A. F. Lascelles, his secretary, and Maj. Solbert, who were his only com- panions, two girls zazed .long and hard at the royal youth, but did not appear sure that they recognized him. On Fifth avenue, where he stopped his car to buy some to- bacco, a crowd gathered before he had time to alight and the prince old his chauffeur to drive on. Photo to Be Sold. The Syosset Fire Department feels sure of the success of its campaign for funds to buy a new engine, sinc: the prince has offered an autographed | photograph of himself to be disposed of by the department. The picture. in a_ green-and-gold frame, was placed today in the window of a piumbing shop. The prince seldom gives auto- graphs or pictures of himself. But when Joseph Robinson, superintend- ent of the Burden estate, which the prince occupies, told him of the dif- ficulty the firemen faced in raising $14,000 for a new piece of apparatus, he promptly offered to help. A policeman, reaching the scene, charged Plummer with driving while drunk. In Police Court yesterday after- noon Plummer’s case was dismissed by Judge McMahon, who said he would give Plummer the benefit of the doubt. there being some doubt as to whether he was intoxicated or whether the nature of his load de- cided him in making such a quick get-away from the scene of the accident. The latter was Plum- mer's explanation. He said he didn’t want the crowd to know what he had in the wagon, so he left the scene of the collision as fast as his 32-year-old horse could navigate, D. C. LABOR FINDS PLENTY OF WORK Both Skilled and Unskilled Fully Employed—Surplus of Clerks and Salespeople. Increase in employment of skilled and unskilled labor in the District of *olumbia during the past month was reported by the Department of La- bor's employment service yesterday. A surplus of clerks and salespeople in Washington still exists, but recent demands for this class of worker de- creased the surplus, the service said. Supply and demand for colored do- mestics was described as fairly sat- isfactory. Building trades were declared to be fairly well-employed, with the con- struction program augmented during the post month. While some of the major industries in the cities of Maryland are operated on part-time schedule, with slight re- ductions in forces engaged, there is not much more than the usual amount of unemployment expected at this time of year. A large amount of skilled and common labor is steadily employed on the building and repair- ing of roads in the rural sections, while building tradesmen and skilled mechanics are well employed. Industrial employment in Virginia incrcased slightly during the past month, although there is still a sur- plus of unskilled labor in some sec- tions of the Staté. Consideraple build- ing is under way, while farm labor demands exceed the supply in some places. President Coclidge expects to speak in Philadelphia on' the night of September 25 at the exercises cele- brating the 150th anniversary of the meeting of the First Continental Con- Rress, although he has not yet definitely accepted the invitation. Mr. Coolidge expects to confine his speaking engagements to occasions to | * which he has been invited as Presi- dent and not to make any political speaking tour. In this connection, he told friends been received, but he had no plans for any other addr outside the city. Some of his advisers, however, consider it likely the President will accept some of the invitations he has recelved for participation in exercises in Middle Western cities. George E. Foss, former Representa- tive from Iilinois, was a guest of Mr. Coolidge at luncheon yesterday. He sald Illinois appeared strong for the Republican ticket. P. IS FEARFUL Insists Coolidge’s Proposed Speech in Middle West Indicates Forebodings. Reports that President Coolidge might speak in the Middle West were characterized by Chairman = Clem Shaver of the Democratic national committee as “a cry for help” from Republican State managers in that section. “Conditions,” the chairman said in a statement, “evidently haves been re- ported as so serious that the Presi- dent's presence is deemed necessary, in spite of the previous policy of keeping him in the White House and letting Mr. Dawes do the heavy work. “It is significant that the cry for help, which apparently has been heeded, comes from Ohio, Illinois and Missouri. Heretofore the Republi- can claim as to these States, particu- larly Ohio and Illinois, have admit- ted of no doubt whatever. The rea- son for the change in attitude, of course, is the tremendous impression John W. Davis has made on the country.” Chairman Shaver asserted he had receivéd from Senator Pitman, Demo- crat, Nevada, who was in Denver with the Democratic nominee, a mes- sage expressing confidence that Davis would carry the Western States in which he had spoken—Nebraska and Colorado. e e Mrs. Eiizabeth Finnerty, who is in business for herself in Philadelphia, has begun court proceedings to have her husband enjoined from having any say or derive any benefit from the business. yesterday, many such invitations have lawyer.
