STUDIES TO LESSEN HOUSEHOLD LABOR lllinois Woman Sees New Style of Architecture Dic- tated by Women. Special Dispatch to The Star. SAVOY, I, September 1.—Illinois claims the leading exponent of “household engineering” in Mrs. Henry M. Dunlap of Savoy. Her home is believed to have no superior as an exemplification of convenience. labor saving and the elimination of drudgery. It was erected after care- ful planning and with a view to save footsteps. The kitchen, dining room, laundry and, in fact, every portion of the house was given close attention with & view of carrying out her principles of convenience, saving of strength and labor and general efficinecy. Changing the plebian task of dish- ‘washing to a pleasure is part of Mrs. Dunlap’s program. Her activities in the Illinois Farm- ers’ Inetitute and Household Science Departments has brought her into prominence. Due to her campaign- ing in this field Illinois farm house- Wwives generally express a more philo- sophical attitude toward life and greater optimism than do most city women, it is sald. They read more and find greater pleasure in common thinge. “In my work over the State,” said Mrs. Dunlap, “I believe I have heard more complaints against the three- times-a-day duty of dishwashing than any of the numerous tasks in home- making. I do not belicve I ever heard a woman or young girl say, ‘1 like to wash dishes’ But I believe that as we grow in home-making and study of household engineering that much of the disdain will be overcome. And when such an attitude of mind does enter into any home without doubt it was gained through some great changes in the methods of per- forming the task. Factors in Dishwashing. “We can name six different steps in dishwashing—scraping waste from the surface of dishes, stacking in pan or receptacle, washing, rinsing, dry- ing and laying away In the cupboard. Each step should be studied to know the right tools to use that the work may be performed in the quickest time and with the least expenditure of effort. A different arrangement as to location of sink, stove and table space and their relation to the dining room will ofttimes take away much of the drudger: “It is astonishing what a little more table or shelf space properly placed will do to save time and wasted effort upon the part of the worker. Very few of our homes unfortunately are built to save steps, and the aver- age architect is criminal in his lack of knowledge as to woman's needs in the performance of her household tasks. Too long have women abided in man's inhuman architecture, but it is not going to last much longer, for more and more women are begin- ning to know what they want and “1 sometimes wish that our ‘old, inconvenient homes could be replaced by livable ones, for I am sure it every homemaker and bring the true spirit of love for the common task into the hearts of our women. ‘Table Space Essential. “If housewives do not have table space to meet the needs of their daily dishwashing, then in some way they should get it. They should put up shelves if no floor space is avail- able, or take a’ commion table and place casters under it and make it adjustable to any place where that table space is needed. When secured housewives will see what a help this move will be in overcoming the dis- like of dishwashin —— FAMED MODELS GIVEN. Michelangelo’s Work Is Made Accessible to Public. So very few Of the original models of Michelangelo's statues are in existence and so fixed is the opinion that he did not use y that it is believed the news will arouse the most widespread interest. __MUSICAL INSTRUCTION. o | SINGING) s Terth year, Mme.
