C. Guards- men Since Muster In for Fort Monroe Stay. Special Dispatch to The Star. FORT MONROE, Va. July 23.— Yesterday was “pay day” for the members of Battery A, 260th Artillery, District National Guard, here for their first two weeks’ annual encamp- ment. Checks to cover armory drills for the quarter ending June 30 were received from the finance officer, 3d Corps Area, Baltimore, Md., and were immediately distributed to the officers and men. This is the first pay that members of the battery have received since being mustered in on June 17. The various beaches and resorts the vicinity of Fort Monroe are pro ing popular with the artillerymen. All duties, except necessary camp duties, end’ at 3:30, and the men are free until reveille. There are no re- strictions on the camp. No guard duty is required and passes are un- known. The commanding officer is very anxious that all members of the outfit take advantage of the recrea- tional advantages available here, and as soon as the duties assigned for hte day are finished nothing is left in their to prevent leaving camp. For those who do not care to leave, the camp bathing beach is within 150 feet of the barracks, and the men are required to go in swimming at least twice a day, immediately upon rising in the morning and at 4 p.m. Hot and cold shower baths are pro- vided in camp. New High Speed Record. A new high record for speed in loading, ghting and firing was set vesterday by the troops, 26 seconds from the load and fire commands be- ing reached, beating the previous day’s record by 2 seconds. Second Lieut. James D. Eggleston was exec- utive officer of the gun crew making the record, Sergt. LeRoy S. Mann, gun commander, and Sergt. Lyman E. Morris, plotter. Private Perry W Michaels, 624 G street northeast, and Private Flovd fathias, 3844 Thir- ty-second street, Mount Rainfer, Md., veceived slight foot injuries at gun drill yesterday morning. Yesterday afternoon was devoted to study of gun tion under direction of Maj. ‘W. Burns, commanding, who is giv- ing a series of lectures in artillery work A trip is being planned to occupy the last two days of camp, which in- cludes a visit to Fort ), N, Where the motorized artillery ment will be studied. Instruction will also include anti-aircraft and railroad artillery. The training at the. guns here is in charge of Sergt. DeWitt M. Branden, sergeant-in- structor of the organization, assisted by Sergt. Joseph Uzella and Private James Robinson, the latter two having been detailed by Maj. E. W. Putney, commanding the 12th Regiment of Har- bor Defense Artillery, to assist the District Guardsmen The entire battery is_spending to- day in observing the Citizens' Mili- tary Training Corps students at ser- vice fire from Batteries Parrott, An- derson and Eustis. Tomorrow’ will be devoted to gun drill and sub- caliber fire practice. Sub-caliber fire will commence Friday and Saturday, a smaller gun being placed inside the barrel of the large 12-inch gun and fired at targets in exactly the same manner as the larger guns. Saturday afternoon will be devoted to athletics, another fishing trip is being arranged for Sunday and a lirge number of Washington people are expected down Sunday and Mon- day to observe the service firing with the 12-inch gun. PAY ON NEW SCHEDULE. D. C. Employes to Get Benefit at Once. All District employes whose ratings were increased by the Personnel Clas- sification Board since original decision of last September will be paid im- mediately at the new schedule, Maj. D. J. Donovan, auditor, announced today. The exact number of workers bene- fited by this ruling has not been de- termined. The list is known to in- clude a number of the employes of the free public library. There are some cases in which the new alloca- tions are somewhat lower. e Perrygo Gets Reprieve. Edgar R. Perrygo, the young man who in February, 1920, is said to have kiiled Mrs. Emma Faithful, at her homg in Congress Heights, will not be hanged next Friday. Chief Justice MeCoy, at the request of At- torney James A. O'Shea, today de- ferred the execution until November 14. Would Do Away With 3-for-25 Cents Rate for Tokens. The Washington Rapid Transit Company agzin petitioned the Public Utilities Commission today for a straight 10-cent fare on its motor bus lines. The company set forth that the action of the cemmission in April In raising the cash fare from $ to 10 cents, but requiring the sale of tokens at three for 25 cents, has not resulted in increasing the operating revenue. “The reports of this company,” the | application reads, “already made for the months of May and June, 1924, and the report which will be made for July will show that this increase in the rate of fare has not had the effect of increasing operating rev- enues of the company,.and will, it belicved, convince the commission that the original application for a stralght 10-cent cash fare should be granted.” Fixed Temporary Date. Through Attorney Conrad H. Sy the company states that it was vised by the secretary of the com- mission “that the rate fixed in Apri should remain In force for three months, at the end of which its effect on the operating revenues would in some measure be established At the hearing several months ago the company contended that during this year it would have to replace u large number of busses, which would call for substurtiol experditures. A few weeks ago the company obtained a new bus of more modern design and placed it on trial service. Ball>ts were placed in this bus, and the pas- sengers were invited to vote on the question of whether they would be willing to pay the straight 10-cent || fare with modern equipment. It probable that the company will a quaint the commission with the r sults of this poll. BOOTLEGGERS LUCKY. None of Them Arrested, Drunks Are Taken.
