One of the most successful excur- siors of this season was that given by the Home for Widows and Orphans of United States War Veterans' Asso- clation Saturday to Marghall. Hall. About four thousand men, women and children, which included ‘veterans of all wars and their allied organiza- tions, were on the trip., This orgauni- zation is composed of veteruns of the civil war, Spanish-American —‘war, world war, and marines ‘and sailors and all of their ladies’ auxilfaries. ‘The most interesting feature of the athletic events of the day was the fifty-yard walking contest for veter- ans of the civil war. In this vete ans took part whose ages were near the century mark. Commander Henry J. Dunbar of Burnside Post. No. 8. G. A. R, was first winner, with Maj. H. L. Deam, past department com- mander of the department of the Potomac, G. A. R., as second, Com- mander Dunbar winning by six inch- es. Maj. Deam lays his defeat on count of carrying a heavy cane. The drill by a company known as €he ' old guard recent! organized Wwith Chancy O. Howard as captain, zave a drill in the afternoon which ‘was heartily applaugded. Veternns Homored.
