Seven years ago a Washington base ball fan, whose confidence in his Home team as a pennant contender had gradually withered and died dur- ing long years of diamond fiascos, made a' vow to himself that he was through with the game forever. E bittered by disappointment after dis- appointment, his struggling hope of some time seeing Walter Johnson pitch his team to victory before a world series crowd gone, this tem- peramental, and perhaps, unsports- manlike fan swore that he never again would enter the portals of American League Park until the Washington team was in first place. Yesterday this same fan, somewhat the worse for wear and showing the effects of his seven-year itch to see a ball game, sneaked out of his office at 1 o'clock and turned his steering wheel out Georgia avenue way. Caught in a tide of other motor cars 9 s the same direction, he was ept around several times in a rlpool of traffic as he reached a vicinity suspiciously near Clark Grif- fith’s Stadium, and twenty minutes later found himself and car cast up on a side lot in front of Freedmen's Hospital. Was Chronic Grouch. Seven years of abstinence from base ball had made this man a chronic grouch. Consequently, when friends saw one of his fenders car- ried downstream in the . rush for parking space, they looked for an outburst of profanity. Their shocked ars heard instead, however, a chuckle and a remark that it was an old fender, anyhow. Borne along on foot in the jam of fans which stormed the gates of the park, the grouch joked with those ahead of him as he was forced to ait in line for a ticket. When his 0at caught on the turnstile and ripped the pocket he smiled at the ticket-taker. H irits rising as a popular tune truck up by the Navy B he hurried with his grandstand ticket in his hand, only to find that all the seats were taken, not even standing space available. But he did not fal- ter. Onward he pushed his way to- ward the left-field pavilion, and at the far end of the less elite section did he ensconce himself on the abrupt end of a wooden bench and behind a sturdy girde.. Long Time to Wait. Seven years was a long time to wait. Nothing could stop him now. When. in the second half of the first inning, Bucky Harris, that young rascal who has had the audacity to plunge the National Capital into pen- nant-winning aspirations, doubled into the far outfield and was scored on Goslin's terrific triple, there arose a mighty shout from 30,000 throats, and above all could be heard the hoarse and thunderous cry of one whose lungs had given way to seven years of pent-up vell-inertia. And leading, like Abou Ben Adhem, all the rest. this frenzied fan con- tinued to rock the ironwork above him for frame after frame as he saw his idol. Walter Johnson, cooly smok- ing the old pill across the plate in the supreme knowledge that his team was, for the first time in nineteen years, on top of the American League pile and burning its way toward the grouch’s long-hoped-for pennant. When the first game had ended, 5 to 0 in favor of Washington, a fan leaped onto the fleld, closely follow- ed by thousands of his ilk. It was the grouch. He felt seven years younger as he rushed and crushed his way toward the Washington dug- out in enthusiasm over the victory. ‘Would his ardor wane as he watch- ed the second game slip by to the tune REO Four-bearing Crankshaft Perfectly balanced THE TREW MOTOR CO. of 1 to 0, with the Washington team holding the goose egg? At least he stayed until the last man was out in the last half of the last inning, and he was among the last to leave the park after all was over. Back to where his car was parked he slowly wended his way. Could it be that the team's defeat in the final game had brought back his old cynic- ism? Was his first show of enthuslasm merely the reaction in the excitement af the moment? Would he vow again to refrain from the game for another seven years? : A night of reflection, would tell. This morning the grouch picked up the morning paper from the front doorstep and focussed his eye on the weather report. . “If oniy it doesn't rain today,” he muttered. no doubt, Entry Ports to Close at 9 P.M. Nogales, Douglas and Naco, the three ports of entry in Arizona, were added today to the list of southern border ports which are to be closed at 9 pm. each day instead of mid- night. The same regulations will ap- DIy to these ports as have been ap- plied to the California ports and that at El Paso, which have been closed at 9 p.m. daily in an effort to check illicit traffic and the movement of contraband. - Indications were given at the Treas- ury that several Texas ports will come under similar regulations at an early date.
