Harvesting of the wheat crop in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas will re- quire 50,000 laborers, who must be imported into the wheat belt, the Labor Department estimated yesterday, The harvest already has started in me parts of Texas, and while suffi- cient labor has been furnished to the Fort Worth section several thousand more men will be needed in the Pan- handle section than ¢an be had in the state. Organization of a regiment of en- gineer reservists, known as the 343d Regiment, Engincer Reserve Corps, has been undertaken here. The unit, which has been authcrized by the War Department, will embody per- sonnel from the District of Columbia, Maryland and nearby Virginia. Head- quarters and Ist Battalion are lo- cated at 1631 Pennsylvania avenue, | under command of Col. John Stew- art., Engihzer Officers’ Reserve Corps. In addition to the regular person- nel, the War Department has author- ed a regimental band. for which the rnment has furnished all the n sary instruments and equip- ment. A number of recruits for the band now are receiving instruction from W. J. Stannard, leader of the United States Army Band. It is ex- pected the regiment will be sent to Fort Humphreys, Va., training in August. An invitation to young men in Washington who are qualified to join the regiment is extended.
