BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 29.—In today's bond market Interest centered in the new offerings, the most important of which was the $35,000,000 Baltimore and Ohio refunding and general 6s. serles C, offered at par. This is the first step in the large refunding oper: ation necessary to meet the road's 1925 maturities. The new bonds were heavily oversubscribed, traders re- garding them as attractive because both of the yield and of the fact that they will be legal investments for savings banks in this state. The of- fering _was followed by activity in the Baltimore and . Ohlo out- standing bonds on the exchange. The convertible 41¢8 and the refunding 58, secured under the same mortgage as the new issue, sold down and then recovered. Another Rall Ofiering. The other important new offering. also a rallroad issue, was $7,734.000 in New Orleans, Texas and Mexico firat 51;s, series A, maturing in thirty years, at a price to vield 5.57 per cent This ‘issue also is in anticipation of the maturity in October, 1925, of the outstanding first mortgage 6s. This offering llkewise was readlly taken On the exchange New Orleans, Texas and Mexico income 6x continued their upward movement, reaching a new high for this recovery. Strength in New Haven bonds was the feature of the dealings in the speculative rails, the 6s of 1948 ad- vancing a point and a half. St. Paul issues were about steady. No Change in High Grades. There was no important change in the high-grade fnvestment list. In- surance companies were in the market for selected issues, but were not in the mood to bid up prices. It was reported today that the Treasury De- partment had been a large buyer of the third 41, per cent liberties. It is believed now that the government offering of new Treasury certificates next month may go as high as § 000,000. Irregularly was the rule among the industrials. Virginia Carolina Chemi, had another drop on the announcement that the interest due June 1 would not be paid. Among the utilities Public Service Corporation of N. J. 58 were strong. In the forelgn group Swiss Glis were active again around the low point reached after the dissolution of the syndicate. Mexican issues were lower through doubt as to the ability of the Mexican government to fill its part in the agreement covering the the debt readjustment. European obligations generally were a shade lower. BACK TO 5 PER CENT. Baltimore Market Dealers Aban- don Increase in Commission Rate. Special Dispatch to The Star BALTIMORE, May 29 —Commission men here have returned to a 5 per cent rate on produce sold for farmers, according to an announce- ment issued by the Maryland Farm Bureau Federation. Farmers selling to Baltimore mer- chants received notification early this week of a proposed 2 per cent increase in commission, making the rate received by the merchants 7 per cent. A number of farmers Tuesday met with M. Melvin, state secretary of the Maryland Farm Bureau Federa- tion, to discuss methods of combat- ing the proposed increase. While the farmers were in sessfon ssion merchants issued another statement announcing continuance of the former rate of per cent, Mr. Stewart said. Anne Arundel county farmers, ac- cording to reports received by the federation, are prepared to go ahead with a co-operative marketing scheme for handling their own produce in the event of difficulties with the com- mission dealers. NEW YORK, May 29.—The cotton market appeared to be more Im- portantly influenced by the continued bullish average of crop and weather news than by relatively easy Liver- Dool cables during téday's early trading. The opening was steady at unchanged prices ‘to an advance of 7 points and active months sold some 10 to 20 points net higher, July advancing to 29.70 and October to 26.59 on covering, Wall street and commission house buying. The south was a moderate seller here on the advance, however. and after initial buying orders had been supplied the market eased off a few points from the best under realizing. Private cables reported selling of new crop months on more favorable crop advices, but ssid there was buy- ing of near months against spinners’ calling. tealizing attracted by the early advance was absorbed on reactions of 10 or 12 points and trading turned quiet. * Seiling was restricted by private report of heavy rains in the southwest and apprehensions that clearing weather would be accom- panied by a drop in temperature over the holidays. As a result prices held steady with July selling around 29.65 and October 26.48 at midday, or about 5 to 10 points net higher. Cotton futures closed barely stead: NEW ORLEANS. May 29.—The cot- ton market ope: quite steady, con- sldering unfavorable Liverpool cables, first trades being unchanged to 5 Dpoints down from the previous close. Prices rallied 14 to 20 points imme- diately after the first call, July ad- yancing to 29.66 and October to 25.80. H The improvement was due mainly to| reports of heavy rains in Oklahoma and to cables stating that liquidation in Liverpool was being absorbed by trade buying. Another private con- dition estimate developed, coming from a prominent southern socia- tion, making the average 64.9. Cotton futures closed stendy at et advance of 5 to 10 points. i At July October December January . March Opentug 2 ber. bid 60 e October 2 March, cember, 25.33, bid. CHICAGO, May 29.—With further raine west and southwest, wheat prices averaged a little lower today in the early dealings. A decline at Liverpool tended also to ease here. Initial prices were un- changed to % off, July 441 to 443, but then slight general gains took place. Provisions were quiet and without any significant change in price. Subsequently purchasing of Sep- tember delivery on scale orders had a bullish effect on the wheat market as a whole.
