When there were 1,000 the average attendance stiil exceedingly high.” There are ten times as many churches for every thousand persons in some of the rural districts as there are in New York city, the expert con- tinued, yet . the percontage of at- tendance of every thousand persons is slightly lower in these rural sec- tions than in New York Such a showing he declared a star- tling lack of system in the distribu- tion of rural churches, “and a woeful waste of the religious potentalities of the country.” Dr. Galpin quotes statistics show- ing that only ome-fifth of the rural population goes to church; that every seven out of ten rural churches have “only a fraction of a pastor aplece,” and “that one-third of all rural pas- tory receive so low a salary that they can live only by working at some other occupation. “System needs to be instilled the religious life of countr: Dr. Galpin continues. enough churches in U today, if they were distribu basis 'of real neced rather than on th grounds of competitive religion, (: reach the remotest sections of our country.
